I must have had slow cars my entire life because I'm plenty happy with the 4.0's power. But then again I came from a 89' Isuzu I-mark RS, 92' Nissan Hardbody, and a 97' Chevy Blazer.

I'm getting older and my memory isn't so great but I remember that several years ago auto manufacturers had to recalculate how they listed horsepower numbers. Seems like the 4.0 Tacoma was rated 250 plus HP. A lot closer to the new 2016. Am I remembering correctly?

I hate admitting my 4.0 Taco only has 236 HP from the factory. That seems so measly when you can buy sedans with more HP. Just seems like a truck should have more power.

That being said, I've never felt like my truck didn't have the power it needed while actually driving it. Sure it downshifts up steep hills, but when you consider it tries to keep itself in the 1,500-2,300 RPM range all the time it's doing pretty well.

Not a very efficient engine granted. Considering the poor mileage you get with such low RPM ranges. But I was happy today to see my last tank of gas got me 19.2mpg!!

Thats blasphemy , we all know just the sheer number of cylinders and larger displacement immediately lowers your MPG.
Add V8 sticker and thats automatic 6 MPG loss right there

Well it not a race car but you get used to it. The truth is 5 or 6 years later you realize that the less you drive like a maniac and try to hit 0-60 in 7 seconds, the more money you save on gas.

I used to wonder about that horsepower comparison too. Then it was pointed out to me... Put a heavy trailer on both the sedan and the Tacoma (and just for fun, fill up the bed of the truck, too). And then race that 290 HP sedan up the ramp on the interstate and see who hits 70 first.

That's a difference between car engine and truck engine. That's why new 2016 has only 6800 towing capacity despite usin 3.90/4.30 gears and having 270+ HP at high rpms.
Taco tic is getting replaced by taco whine.

So the working capacity is going down, but it's gonna get a little snappier in 16?

Only on first 4 gears because it will have lower ratio. Than 5th will even out and 6th will be overdrive.
That's based on what Toyo ent said and a fact that his description matches ab60 transmission which has, what it sounds, a very similar ratios.

Interestingly I felt the same thing when I first got the truck, it seemed a bit sluggish. Now that the break in's complete it definitely feels much more responsive, same thing goes for the brakes.

I babied my 15 for the first 10k so I don't know but one thing I really like is the power and acceleration this truck has. All you guys saying these trucks are slow are comparing them to full size with V8s.

Y'all should all come drive my old V6 ranger then you will think these tacos are rockets. That thing took almost 15 seconds to get to 60 and then you were out of gas. Haha. I'll take 7 seconds anyday over that.

If you want a "fast" truck get into a newer non-dually diesel. We've got an 07 chipped duramax for pulling trailers at the shop. It'll haul some ass. It feels like it goes faster than my xrunner but in all reality it's only a second maybe 2 seconds quicker. It's just the heighth of the truck that makes it feel like it's going much faster. Just like a low mustang because its stock height you feel like you're skipping along the ground. Although a mustang is faster than Tacoma pickups if you want speed from a truck, enough speed to play with mustangs and base V8 camaros get a chipped duramax upgrade the turbocharger and they run pretty nice.

Gen. 2s are fast, mine will hit 30 to 70 in like 3 seconds, 2005 Prerunner 4.0v6 SR5 TRD OR

o_O Maybe if its chipped with an upgraded turbo but stock most diesel trucks are at least 8 seconds 0-60 and handle like the tank they are. All 2nd gen tacos will do it in under 8 seconds and a V6 prerunner will do it in 6.8 seconds. I find it hard to believe even a modified diesel will keep up with the 5 seconds or less even a base V8 Camaro or Mustang will do. It'll probably put up a good fight but it'll still lose by a couple of seconds in a quarter mile.

I just purchased a 2015 TRD Sport 4x4 (from an 80 series Land Cruiser - talk bout slow!), and have the same thoughts as the OP.

As commented earlier I'm certain it's the gearing which can be re-worked. I'll begin looking for threads on that right about...now

How are you going to "rework" the gearing?

I mentioned upgrading up there ^ and you'd be amazed how the 07 duramax fights up and goes. I never said beat. But on the highway it's fun to play with mustangs and camaros. Off the line from a dead stop you're gonna lose. A truck is a truck. It's heavy. Not built to go fast. On the highway rolling at 65-70 you can throttle up and blow the doors off almost anything with the right tune on those big turbo diesels.
