New California law tracks ammunition sales

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed AB 962 yesterday. Consequently, effective February 1, 2011, Californians will have to provide complete personal information, plus a thumbprint, to buy pistol ammunition. In addition, the bill requires that all pistol ammo sales be “face to face”. This could effectively ban mail-order ammunition sales in California. Cabela’s, a leading outdoor retailer, has told customers that it will stop shipping ammo to California if AB 962 became law.

Though AB 962 was designed to control pistol ammunition purchases, it will also affect rifle ammunition sales because California law defining pistol ammo is broad and vague. Basically, AB 962 could be extended to virtually any ammo which has ever been used in a pistol. That certainly will include 22LR, 22 Magnum, .221 Fireball, and .223 Rem for starters.

Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoed similar legislation a few years ago, based on the fact that a similar federal scheme had been tried and later abandoned as a complete failure. However, the Governor reversed himself, explaining: “Although I have previously vetoed legislation similar to this measure, local governments have demonstrated that requiring ammunition vendors to keep records on ammunition sales improves public safety. These records have allowed law enforcement to arrest and prosecute persons who have no business possessing firearms and ammunition: gang members, violent parolees, second and third strikers, and even people previously serving time in state prison for murder. Moreover, this type of record keeping is no more intrusive for law abiding citizens than similar laws governing pawnshops or the sale of cold medicine.”

Been that way here in LA forever. This state is so F'd up its crazy. At least the NRA is working against this as we speak.

Amen! At least where I live I can go 5 miles east into Indiana and get as much ammo of any kind that I can afford.

 

The ammunition manufacturers can step in and issue a "stop sale" to California period. Which would inlude law enforcement.

This has been done by the founder/owner of Barrett. His company will not sell to LEO in Cali. due to the ban on assualt weapons in that state.

That will wake those idiots up in that state.

Stupid law. Criminals will just travel to other states to get their ammo. Of course it has nothing to do with crime. The liberals (Arnold is one) just want to take away more personal freedoms IMO. Big government = bad government.

 

Just another reason not to live in California. This law is ridiculous.

 

This is the reason for the 2nd Amendment. The people need a means to keep the goverment in check if and when it oversteps it's limits. The Founding Fathers knew this from the beginning.

 

Ive never had any problems buying quantity of ammo in Illinois. As far as I know there are no ammo restrictions. What kind of problems you getting in IL?

All these screwed up gun laws across the nation only stop LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. Criminals dont go to the store to buy guns or ammo, we do. Criminals will always get what they need no matter what. Its only the people like us that follow these laws. Ammo restrictions, waiting periods, gun type restrictions, only affect us. They do nothing to deture crime or stop the criminals. I cant understand how the politicians dont understand this? If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Simple as that. Why are they punishing us for following the rules? It makes Joe Citizen strongly consider breaking the rules so they can have what they need or want. Im getting fed up. Something needs to change.

 

This would be the single most effective way to kill this bill. The CEO of Barrett made a very smart move and I hope others follow. I'm glad that backwards state is as far from me as physically possible.

 

Couldnt agree more. Main reason these laws get passed is because of "feel good politics". The sheeple feel safer thinking guns are banned when in reality they are only disarming themselves and setting themselves up to get raped and pillaged.

Prime example: Chicago handgun ban is and has been the definition of ineffective. Every day the gangbangers are shooting up the city. Why? because gun laws dont apply to criminals.

 

I know there are a lot of people looking at this post and thinking... "So, I dont live in Cali, what do I care?" Every gun law passed is a victory for the Anti-Gun agenda. Every law is a stepping stone. An example to use when your state wants to pass a law. I wish I had the freedoms of other states, but I dont. Everyone across the country needs to voice their opinions to stop this from spreading. We need to work together. Join the NRA if you love your freedom. They are fighting the fight but they cant do it without you. Look at the history of these laws. Once its been passed in one state, the flood gates open. We need to stand up for what we believe in. Thats what made this country strong.

I will remain a law abiding citizen right up to the point where it interferes with preventing myself from protecting myself & my family from the government aka criminals aka government aka gangstas aka government. Past that there is one rule...self preservation aka survival aka self rule.
