Rust coming through white paint around windows

haha i opened this up to the first page and said "hey that guy copied me" then I went to page 2 and found my post.....

 

Nope, just around the windows. I wash my truck every few weeks, and I get pretty close to the body when washing and I get a good idea of what's going on with it and where new chips are located.

 

OK. I just washed my truck and I thought it was tar but it isn't. I have tiny pin sized rust colored spots all over my truck.. I tried scratching one with my finger nail and nothing came off. I used bug and tar remover and still there. these spots are smooth.. there is no chipped paint. There are spots everywhere, side panels of the doors, bed side panels, tailgate. And it isn't on the low side where you would expect rock dings. Worst part is that where I do have rock dings, there isn't any rust.

 

seems like the trucks were not prepped correctly from factory before paint was applied...or the metal used to make the trucks weren't treated (as in chemical treatment) correctly. This can cause what is called dissimilar metal corrosion...I see this all the time at work when you have two different metal compositions have been sealed together and begin reacting chemically, then over time you find bubbled paint and corrosion under it.

 

We have the white 2010 tacoma's as our company sales trucks... And we to have the rust on the window frames.. I Have an MGM 2010 and no rust they yet... i think its something the dealer would have fixed for you.

 

does anyone know if toyota paint is warranted for the life of the vehicle or does the fix need to be under the extended warranty? still worried about this issue on my truck .

 

Not sure, I brought my Taco into the shop for paint repair at just under 60,000 kms. run it by your dealership (or another dealership) and ask them where they are getting their authority to say when the limit is, and have them open up the warranty book and show you where it says so too.

 

Got the same thing happening as the OP on my 2012 DCLB. The dealer sent me for a quote at a paint shop and I'm waiting for results. Don't think they are rock chips as I had noticed those after a few months owning the truck. First I thought it was tar or something like it but looks like the paint has fine cracks and it's rusting from under in that area. Crossing my fingers that it'll be under warranty. I'm at 48K km. The rest of the paint looks good other than the occasional rock chips on the bottom half of my truck.

 

Yikes that looks just like the issue I had. I think what saved my wallet was that I was just under the 60,000 km warranty (Canada), and that it appeared that Toyota acknowledged a problem because they just booked me in to an auto body shop right away. It's been a few years since I posted this and the auto body shop in Edmonton Alberta did a good job because there is no rust coming through in those same spots that they buffed out and re painted. Hope your truck gets fixed up!

 

I have this same exact thing on my white 05 DCLB. Its not too bad as of now, i just assumed they were rock chips. I dont have warranty tho so i think i am SOL.

 

I inspect and fix them after every wash or every few washes. Pretty much every time I start seeing any hint of brown, its expected more in lifted trucks with big tires that pickup a lot of road debris. Its a poor design if you ask me. I use a paint pen with an abrasive tip on the cap and scrape in to the rust. I then use a rust converter gel and allow it to soak in for 10-15 mins and the rust turns black. I then use the brush on the paint pen and paint over the chip. I will be repainting the truck in a year or two and will be using diamond coat clear from KSB coatings over a quality PPG paint. The factory paint on most cars sucks! Its way too thin, and dont get me started on the new water based paints manufactures use!

 

Still waiting to hear from Toyota. It would be nice having a new paint job just before it turns to 60k km's but I was already planning on having parts of my truck bed lined in a few years.

 

I'm surprised its happening so soon. You must do a lot of commuting on dirt roads? I'm at almost 200K KM and mine is not too bad. Like I said I fix every new stone chip I see after every wash or two. Truck also sees lots of dirt roads or just bad roads all together.

 

Yes I do, for work. More than a third of my mileage is on dirt roads but I have had those since very early on.

 

am i smelling a new recall?

Personally i would not want my door repainted, had bad experiences with body shop paint jobs not holding up like the factory... Though they do have to honor a lifetime warranty on their paint.

 

I don't believe the factory paints replacement parts at all. Even the dealership gets primed parts and then the body shop contracted (they don't usually have body shops and subcontract body work) paints it with the correct paint. At least that is how it worked when I cracked up my new truck and needed a near rear quarter panel.

Doubt they will ever do a recall on this. My suggestion for the guys that bought new trucks is to get the 3M on those areas as well as the A pillars, first 10" of your roof starting against your windshield moulding, and bottom door/rocker area.

 

is this just a concern for the 4dr DC
or should a single cab '11 year be concerned to check it out

Just stumbled across this thread. Same thing happened on my 09 access cab. Finally hit it with some touch up paint this weekend that I have had laying around since I bought the truck 6 years ago.

Honestly it's a pretty minor thing. It hasn't gotten any worse for me over the last 6 years.
