When I saw that pic of the hubby on the small screen of my phone, I thought is was a big foot.

Squatch out! That add is hilarious.

Figured out the USGS site. Powerful resource, thanks for the encouragement.

Now, if I can figure out how to include the quote in my reply ...

    Yeah.
It's legit, Toyota of Dallas parts department runs it. I got my TRD wheels from them, and I have ordered various other OEM parts from their online parts catalog. Like when I added fog lights to my 2011, it was wired but didn't have the switch or relay. I got the OEM parts through their site so it looked and worked like it came stock.

Their regular parts catalog has good diagrams to make sure you are selecting the right part.

EDIT: Oh, and as far as the spots on your hood, you should get some black touch-up paint and fill them in sooner rather than later. Something that converts any rust would be good just to keep any bad rust from spreading. Black is black (but white is not white), so any black will do. They also sell kits to turn your headlights back to clear.

I'm fairly certain those caps wont work. I'm pretty sure you have after market wheels on your truck. Those caps are for OEM wheels.

Eric's getting started on shocks now. When he pulls those center wheel things off the neighbor is going to do his sandblasting thing or whatever. I'll post some pics and let y'all know if it works or not! I have the perfect spray paint for them if he can get them less rusty.......

This is such a bummer. Apparently we lost the Haynes manual!! Eric brought it with on our Boise/eastern Oregon trip this past weekend. We remember pulling it out and seeing it got soaking wet from a water jug breaking. Then he swears he threw it back in the bed somewhere. But everything is unpacked and it's nowhere to be found. Grrrr. Anyway, he's winging it with the Chilton manual now. Pretty sure when he did the shocks before he used Haynes.

Might post some shock/strut questions later, hoping some of you guys will be around in just in case!!! : )

    Happy Saturday TW!!!

Do you have a spring compressor or are you installing complete front spring/strut assemblies?

    Yeah.
I like that rear design much better than the 2nd gen. Rears should be easy and quick. Fronts are much more involved. I just did both our 4Runner and my Taco, rears took probably 30 minutes per vehicle. Fronts were another story, but my wife was a big help when getting the new ones back on.

Do not loosen that nut (#29) unless the spring has been compressed. It will come apart very violently! If you are installing strut assemblies, then you wont be dealing with that nut.

hi kirk, eric here. we bought the mcpherson spring compressor tool (the kind that you activate with your air hammer) from harbor freight. we are going to take just the shocks back to the parts store and exchange them for our "lifetime warranty." on the struts, i was gonna jack up the front to fully extend the struts. then remove. then compress the springs. take the old shocks to the parts store, get new ones. slip them back into the springs, release the pressure, then use a giant breaker bar to pry them back on the truck. i really don't want to pay for an alignment. does that sound about right to you? i think i drove off with my haines manual on the roof the other day =(

with your miles the springs have to be worn out too, go with the complete strut assembly, its better and with your high mileage plus you go off road so it will be needed. springs don't last forever. plus it means there is no risk of loosing fingers or other body parts

Jack doesn't go high enough. He put a 4 x 6 scrap wood block on top of it to make the difference. Is that safe? When I asked him he said, "nothing is safe about car repairs." Didn't make me feel any better.........

Had to forewarn neighbors last few days that we were doing PM to Taco this weekend so they didn't freak this morning when they saw it jacked up. :D

Wanted to share a funny pic with you guys, but just went to snap it and the item is gone! A neighbor tricked me into taking this huge box of trinkety crap from his garage, by luring me in with the promise of a cast iron giant cooking pot..........that came with a giant box of useless shit. Told me to see if other neighbors wanted any. First one didn't take a thing, and I really thought she would. So then I started hitting up other neighbors, like, "do your neighborly deed and take some crap to lighten my load to rid of." Smart ass neighbor found a clown figurine and noted it's creepiness. I suggested he take it and put it in his roommate's bed to freak him out when he came home. :D He passed on the idea. So instead, I propped creepy clown up on their front porch, to await their arrival home. Smart ass neighbor took it a step further when he saw this and put it on a brick post at the end of our two driveways, pretending he planned to permanently display it there. Then ANOTHER smart ass neighbor and I decided it would be a great idea to super glue it to the post when smart ass neighbor #1 wasn't looking :D I ran inside to get the glue last night but when I came back out, the clown and everyone had disappeared. Pretty sure smart ass neighbor #2 tipped off S.A.N. #1 when I was inside......

If I track that clown down today, I am definitely sharing a pic, one of you might decide you just have to add it to your creepy clown collection..........:D

Sweet, I can hear multiple voices out there, sounds like Eric just accumulated some helpers. Thinking it's neighbor with best tools guy (same guy that I have the clown prank going with), and former army mechanic guy. :)

Disagree on worn springs. If not broken, they are fine unless you want a stiffer or softer ride.

Their struts are free because of warranty, assemblies will wipe out saving money.

You are correct on the procedure compressing springs, just make sure no one can go near them while compressed, they are a potential bomb.

Is there a way you can get the replacement struts and have them ready to be swapped out as soon as old ones are out?

I've changed mine many times and I still get nervous while the springs are compressed.

Just tell the parts guy you will bring the old ones in as soon as you can.

I'm on my phone, give me 10 minutes to get to a keyboard.

One hint: the bottom bolt on the strut assembly is tough to get out. You have to squeeze the rubber boot on the CV joint to slide it out.

I hope you meant Impact wrench, not air hammer. The air impact wrench is the best way to compress the springs, just make sure you tighten the nuts on the compression tool in 1/4" increments, you want to equally compress all sides of that big spring.

The best way to do the job is to clamp the bottom part of the strut in a vice, then start to tighten down the compression tool. If you have 2 people, the vice is not necessary.

The sway bar may give you troubles, you mentioned a big bar, that helps pry the hub up so you can get all the bolts in.
