I bought the rubber mulch 2 yrs ago..really lasts a long time, plus helps retain the water better than the conventional kind. That and I will not put regular mulch anywhere near my house.

    Yeah, that one!

It was built one year after Toyota stopped building 4WD pickups the right way.

What, SFA with a carb? Marty had the only one with EFI and the SFA which I thought was considered the best OEM setup Toyota ever ran.

Yep, just park the little one in the garage while you install it and you can call it bonding time.

My 3 y.o. loves playing in my truck while I work on it. He has gotten good at handing me stuff...or putting it on my chest.

With the growing family, I got the green light to get a cap for the truck. Not hugely excited about losing my bed but it'll make traveling with 2 kids and the dog easier. The dog isn't going to be too happy cause it means he's moving to the bed for the long rides. He's like the Subaru commercial, we have one kid he moves from the whole back seat to just one side, we have another and he moves all the way to the back.

    Morning, faces.
Anybody ever worked with a Sunpro Tach before? I don't have one in my white Dodge, but wanted one. Picked up a Sunpro Mini Super Tach II on Amazon for $30 and took advantage of the rainy weather yesterday to pull the truck into the garage and install it. But the damn thing doesn't work.
I hooked the ground to what I know is a solid ground connection (I tied it into the ground for the switch for my plow light, and that works perfectly), found an unused accessory port under the dash for a power supply (given that it's a bare bones truck, there's a LOT of those under there), and tied into a dimmer-controlled lead for the tach backlight.
The problem is that I get NO reading on the tach. The backlight functions correctly, but the needle doesn't even rise to zero when I turn the key on. That makes me suspect the 12V power supply, so:
I tried running a hot wire and a ground directly from the battery terminals, in case I had a bad/weak connection. Nothing.

I checked to make sure that my green wire (to the coil) was hooked to the correct (negative) terminal. I checked it with my multimeter to make sure I had the right terminal, then I swapped terminals anyway just in case I'd fucked up my test, and then I tried it with a spare coil, just in case. Nothing.

I checked continuity for all of the wires, from the back of the tach housing to the far end of the wire, both with a basic test light and with my multimeter, and as near as I can tell there's no problem with my connections (crimped & soldered, then heat shrink tape applied) or breaks in the wires. No excess resistance, and the test light kicks on nice and bright with no flickering/dimming.

I even tried running a jump lead from the '69 tach wiring to the '84 and running the '69 to see if that'd work (the '69 also has a Sunpro aftermarket Tach, which works) and still nothing. But when I reversed the lead (hooking it to the coil on the '84) and ran the '84, the tach in the '69 read perfectly.

Anybody have any suggestions on anything else to try (other than smashing it with a giant hammer-which I was sorely tempted to do after wasting 2 hours on the damn thing yesterday), or does it sound like it's a defective unit? I've installed them before (but never this brand) and never had a problem, but it's been probably 7 or 8 years since I've done one and I'll admit to being kind of rusty.

The only logical step would be to burn the Dodge to the ground and smash the tach with a hammer.

A lot of people would agree with you however most of the HARD core wheelers would want the one with the carb so they can do a propane conversion. They can do some real crazy angles with propane because the tank is pressurized and it continues to flow.

I never realized why I see a lot of hard core rigs with propane conversions. Makes sense though and a lot cheaper than trying to do it with gas.
