Trail "fix" question

    The Rock Therapy thread got me wondering this.

    If you break a CV on the trail and can't remove the whole CV to replace it (or don't have a spare) can you leave the inner portion (cup) in the front diff, remove the shaft and the stub shaft from the hub, and continue driving? Just as a way to get home or to the shop. Is the wheel bearing/hub dependant on the stub shaft being in?

    I rather find out it won't work here than when I have a genius idea on the trail that ends in disaster.

    Pretty sure the wheel bearing won't survive without the stub shaft in and torqued

    You need a stub shaft in the hub or the bearing will pull apart. Do not drive without a stub shaft in that hub!!!!

    I've got two junk yard spares. I'm just worried that on a trailside I won't be able to get the old CV out or the new one seated. I bought a slide hammer, guess I'll carry that too

    I removed the axle itself when I broke an inner CV on the trail. You have to keep the both hub and and 3rd member stubs in place.
    Rolling around in 2wd, but it got me home.

    I thought about removing the stub in one of my junkyard axles for just that reason. To have a spare stub to get me home or at least off of the trail.

    In that event, if I used my front and rear locker would I still be 3wheel drive?
