Wiper Blade Chatter

Over the years I have tried quite a few wiper blades to get rid of the blade chatter at the bottom of both wipers. The chatter happens in light mist and in heavy rains and is just annoying.

So has anyone use a wiper blade that does not chatter or is the chatter just one of the many features on the 2nd Gen Tacoma?

I am currently running Bosch Icon blades. I have tried Anco, Trico, Valeo, and PIAA.

 

I run cheap NAPAs in summer and NAPA premium in winter. They only chatter when they need replaced.

 

You might try Aquapel on the windshield. It's like RainX but lasts a lot longer. Take off the cowling and clean the windshield below also. Recently my wipers started screeching. It turns out it was the bushing in the articulating arm that the motor drives. Pulled out the assembly and disassembled the bushings, cleaned and greased. Quiet and runs smooth. I use the wiper inserts from Toyota.

You might want to lift the wipers off the windshield and see if there's any chatter. Could be corrosion in the bushings.

 

I have clay-barred my windshield before and that helps dramatically. Might try that just before you put new wipers on.

 

Most likely it is not the blades. The tension spring is most likely weak on the arm and the whole arm needs replaced.

My OEMs never chattered. On my 2009 I replaced with OEM refills and never had a problem in 4 years. I put Boschs on my 2013 last year and they chatter. I tried to buy OEM refills but dealer no stocks and they said I had to buy 10. What am I going to do with 10 refills.

 

sell them on TW?

 

They don't stock them........ but you have to buy 10? I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face hearing that from a dealer.

 

Thank you and I will check these possible causes. I have used Aquapel in the past, I still may have a few left, but I used a two step process suggested by another member that gave me better results at a lower price point.

The Toyota dealership, close by, leaves a lot to be desired. I only go there is I really have to and need the part. Their customer service is non-existent.

 

Does it only chatter in one direction ?

 

Mine does this as well- on the bottom of the driver's side and pretty much all the time on the entire pass side. And it seems like no matter the blade, I get the chatters.
Never thought about the wiper arms...

 

Bosch Icon got rid of it 4 me. Interested to hear what your solution winds up being.

I spoke too soon. I just put on a new set of the cheap NAPA blades for summer and I get chatter on the up swing.

 

In past vehicles I have found that the wiper blades ARMs are sometimes are slightly bent preventing the wiper blade from being able to contact the windshield at the same angle during both upsweep and down sweep. Otherwise stated - the wiper drags on one direction and pushes on it's edge in the other (chatter) direction. I've had success with using a 6" adjustable on the metal arm (not the wiper blade or blasé support assembly) and bending the arm so it is in line with the windshield allowing same angle of blade edge sweep in both directions. This along with ensuring that the glass is completely clean and worn rubber free seemed to help me in almost all cases.

 

I would also suggest trying Aquapel or Rain-X even if you find something else as being the issue. It really seems to help all wipers perform better and not streak or chatter.
