I like racing, I like engineering, and I like fast things. It's one of the 4 or 5 series that I watch on any given weekend. The drama can be funny. The cars are beautiful. But it's always sad to see something rotting from the inside. You can see something for the potential that it has yet to achieve or the glory that it had at one point.

And I will admit this, now that I have been watching for a few years, that I initially tuned in just to see what Kimi would do. Total man crush on that guy, he gives zero f*cks. That's my kind of driver.

Yeah but your " glory " days seem to all be built on nostalgia given that you haven't followed the sport for long . Nostalgia generally doesn't fully translate into reality

So the rest of the reasons I listed have no merit, and that one near the end (that wasn't really a reason, just an observation) means I can't be a fan? Damn. See? Too exclusive.

That is a very cool tech feat, no doubt. Also the basis for many a debate on the driver being removed from the equation. I've heard quite a few drivers (especially those who have driven vintage F1 cars) lament on how much more fun the non by-wire systems are. The nerd in me knows how cool that is, the race purist in me wishes we could give them back some feeling.

I'm merely pointing out that nostalgia doesn't generally translate into reality

For example , if you watch a bunch of old races , more than likely all the ones that are being broadcast are good races , they generally don't rebroadcast the stinkers , so you don't necessarily get a sense of the overall level of the racing without seeing them all .

    You dig ?

And if nostalgia was my only basis for enjoying F1, I would agree that my fan-ship would be seriously flawed. As it is, (and as previously stated) it's a small reason, but I think to say that things are better now than they have ever been is probably also flawed, my lack of experience on the matter notwithstanding.

Now, when HAAS comes in, I will be a complete homer. I know it's going to happen and am powerless to stop it. Murica.

Maybe. I watched that. And Alonso got to drive Senna's McLaren too. Can't find the interview of what he said, but I could have swore he said he preferred it. I doubt he preferred the death rate of the early cars, but something tells me they would still race them even if they were still death traps. I don't see how you can protect the driver the way today's cars protect them and they still get the visceral experience and feel of the car. I guess it's a tradeoff, and I'll live with it if it saves lives, but I still hate they way they sound. Tried watching Formula E the other day. Ehhh...it was hard.

I agree. Completely. It's no longer a gladiator sport. I don't want people to get hurt. On the other hand, racing should be a visceral experience for the fans, right? Shouldn't Formula One be doing everything in their power to make sure that that experience isn't diminished?

I was watching the second or third race with my dad this year, and he turns to me and says "where the sparks coming from?" I told them that they had change the alloy on the strike plate on the bottom of the car to a new one. He said, "just to make the sparks?" I said yes.he said, "cool. Looks like it did when I was younger." I thought that was interesting. My dad is in and every week friend I thought that was interesting. My dad is not in every race fan, but the sparks actually made the experience more enjoyable for him.

Damn , Ferrari's race pace could be the real deal judging by their dry running in FP2

WTF was Mercedes doing sending out both cars on intermediates in that shit
