So I need to ask this. There's been a ton of carnage this year and I'm really curious as to whether it's just an inherent problem with the IFS design of these trucks or if you guys just got a little too rough with them?

I'm on the cusp of selling my cherokee buggy and STI in the hopes of doing a real good solid build. I've been kicking around putting some cash into the truck to get it ready for offroad duty or buying a cheap wrangler and starting from there (which will basically be new axles and driveline).

I want something that's going to last, and I really am a bit nervous about ruining what makes this truck great for me (comfortable, safe DD)

I've taken my truck to Moab (at least) 4 times. Ran Fins-n-Things and Hell's Revenge every time, Moab Rim (Devil's Crack and Z-Turn) once, The Trifecta (Poison Spider, Gold Bar and Golden Spike) once, and many other trails here in Colorado rated above the "build" of my truck.

I wasn't there but I can tell you that Tacoma's in stock or almost-stock form are built enough to do 80%-90% of the trails most people want to do.

You'll be fine as long as you don't thrash on it. And look at the ratio. We had like what, around a 100 trucks? And only a handful had issues. And some of those issues were from previous trips.

most of those issues where from and no offence to the people that broke but Negligence. Pay attention to your truck and what your about to run over and have a good spotter for the stuff you can't see. Doesn't hurt to have a little bit bigger tire and lift.
Now having said that SAS your taco. buy the Allpro link kit and never look back you can run up to 37's with that kit and DD it anywhere you want.

    see below

Lots of heavy foots, and heavy foot+slick rock= lots of stress on drive train. throw in a locker or an odd angle and POP. Now not ALL the carnage was that... but MOST IMO.

some others were just parts that fatigued and chose that weekend to let go. My steering rack developed a leak 2 days before I left, just as easily could have happened as "carnage" from RT.

Maintenance, and proper "preflight" checks will help avoid SOME carnage, but the nature of what we're doing is going to add stress and wear out parts faster than my 60 Y/O dad's truck that sees gravel once a year.

I would take a Tacoma over a Wrangler every day of the year. In my experience, in stock form the Tacoma is more capable (apart from the Rubicon and it's lockers) and 10x more reliable.

X2 on a tacoma over a wrangler. And I'm not saying that cause I truly like Tacomas. But 15+ years of going to moab I've seen many examples first hand of Tacomas (and Toyotas in general) out performing jeeps. Stock and not stock.

Like I told my friend here at home the truck just spend a full week in the most destructive place you could ever take a 4X4 so yeah it's gonna need some TLC before I leave and when I get home.

Do you think the additional weight of camping gear, tools and trail repair parts had anything to do with it? I saw some people's packing list and some where insane by most people's standards (not mine I carry that much shit or more daily cause I'm weird). I've often wondered if the amount of weight I carry in case shit happens makes shit more prone to happen.

That's all left at camp. Trucks were lighter than the average wheeling trip. It just comes down to people not "crawling" and instead "romping".

That is really a hard thing to answer. Weight brings down your ride height and makes it harder for your rear tires to climb but at the same time it give more tractions. really depends on your wheeling style. I prefer for a rig to be 92% of the weight and the other 8% is the driver, passengers, and gear IMO.

Somebody in Moab had the Plano rifle cases with black latches and handles. I don't remember who it was, but a few of us were a little jealous (my cases, and most others, have yellow handles). I think I found them on the US Amazon site. They're on sale too! They wont ship up here to Canada, but I thought I'd share the knowledge in case someone else was looking.

A small handful of select mods.
Also tire size plays a factor both negative and positive. Larger tire typically is more strain on the drive train. Properly geared set ups reduce the strain. A larger tire is helpful the larger the rock or ledge because it changes the break over point of the tire. Smaller tires require more force to get up and over larger rocks and ledges.

And I like to point out that if you have an "EASY" button (locker(s)) they are good to use. Some opinions are that people want the "challenge" which typically leads to strain and possible breakage. But you have to learn when to use the easy button and when not too.
