i work at the Toyota dealership an as many know the 2nd gens with drl have a recall for the reflector melting. When they come in and get the new ones they just throw the old ones away. If anyone would be interested I will take them apart and take the reflector out and seal them back up or I will take the reflector out and do the bohlm. I have both Trd sport housings with are a dark grey not chrome and just the regular chrome housings. If anyone is interested let me know

Make sure that is allowed. In some circles, that is theft. Would hate to see you lose a job over broken headlights.

What part would be theft? They just throw the headlights in the dumpster or tell us we can keep them

Agree with this. Also if it is not an issue then I'm sure some of the people on here who do retrofits would be interested in buying these from you.

People at work take them all the time and put them in their tacomas or sell them

Dumpster diving is illegal. Regardless if you work there or not.

I watched my company throw away over 300 iPads. Nothing was wrong with them but they were 'out dated'. They arrested a guy who was diving in the dumpster pulling them out of the trash.

That's weird but idk no one ever gets in trouble and all the techs just keep them laying around their toolboxes or put them in there trucks when they get the sport lenses

In Az a dumpster is private property. Diving into one or removing anything from it is stealing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you are pulling them and putting them to good use. Just drive me insane how wasteful we are.

Sounds like you are probably fine then. Seems like such a waste, you can correct me if I'm wrong but the only change in the updated headlights is they used a glass lens in front of the DTRL rather than plastic? I guess it was cheaper for Toyota to just replace with new ones then to pop them apart and put in the glass lens.

They're like that here people come in and get new taillights or a grill or anything just cause it has a small unnoticeable scratch on them and they throw them away so people there keep that stuff and take tires that are still good all the time

I can't remember if they put glass or if they pushed the lens out more but yes every morning we have about 20 sets of headlights come in for people that come in for the recall its unreal how much good stuff goes to waste there

My guess is if Toyota Motor Corp knew you were taking "recalled" items and keeping them, they would have an issue with it. Regardless if its legally or illegally taken out of a dumpster.

I'm looking for a BSP rear bumper for my TRD Off-Road if you happen to see one in the dumpster.

    This.

The RTV and recalled stuff legally belongs to Toyota, your dealership and/or the techs have zero claim to it in any fashion. Because they're lying around doesn't mean it's not stolen when it walks into your hands, and I'd just as soon assume Toyota agrees.

Funny thread. Getting my DRL changed now. These parts are not recalled. No safety issue. Just have a defect and it is an extended warranty campaign. I have no reason to ask for the used parts. They would just collect dust in my garage like all the computer parts from salvaged computers I just can't seem to throw away.

Technically it's not, but there are some grey areas. Dumpster diving is legal unless stated via a prominent sign or on private property. When something is thrown away that item now becomes public domain.

Maybe in NY. Here in Az the dumpster, which is sitting on private property, is illegal to go into. Say you want to jump into the dumpster at Walmart. It's on their property and its now illegal for you to take anything. Walmart owns the property.

If you throw it over your back wall into an alley dumpster then they don't care if you dive into it. However its now city owned property because that's a city owned dumpster. Waste management now owns it and you can't just walk into the city dump and take what you won't. Trust me I've tried to take a few bicycle frames I've seen people throw away.

I'm not saying it makes sense. I'm a big fan of dumpster diving. Find any stereo manufacture with an open dumpster and learn how to recon sub woofers. When I was a teenager me and my buddies where the reason MTX and Orion had to seal and lock their dumpsters we raided them so much for the shit they threw away. They destroyed it if we didn't pull it out first. My buddy knew how to fix amps, I fixed the speakers.

We also got caught. Funny when you are being charged with breaking and entering at the age of 15 for dumpster diving.
