Belts?

one of my belts is starting to squeek/chirp pretty good now, started last sunday squeeking just a bit, but now its doing it quiet a bit. i tried doing a search, but for some reason my computer wont allow the search box to drop down for me to use it. so in advance, sorry bout not searching! im wondering where to get the best belts to replace the ones that r on there with the best quality & at the best price. i was going to stop by the stealership today, but they were closed, is autozone or advance auto parts belts just as good, or what & where should i go? thanks!

 

autozone and advanced have good belts.......i've used them before without problems. gates belts are good......as are the Goodyear gatorback belts.

Double check to make sure the squealing noise isn't due to another issue like a bad bearing on a pulley(alternator) or the water pump seizing, etc.

Sorry to threadjack, but i noticed you guys mentioned above to check for bad pulley bearing.. How do i differentiate if its the belt or the pulley?

its been raining the past few days here, and ive noticed some squeeking. It only squeeks when im off the throttle; when i give it gas it is fine.. Any idears fellahs?

 

more than likely....gonna be a pulley,depending on mileage to me.

 

hmm, interesting... but why? i figured since it was quiet under load then the belts were just tight..Not undermining you, just trying to figure this out.. lol..

So next question would be, how the heck do i know which pulley it is...

BTW mileage is 200k+ lol

 

damn....good mileage there man. and i dont mind undermining at all.

more than likely....lke 90%, if a belt is makeing a sqeuallling noise, its a pulley...not a belt, just gotta pinpoint which one it is.

 

will i feel any friction or resistance when i try to free spin the pulley? i hope so, or its just a crapshoot, ughh

 

you will if the belt is still on. take the belts off and then you be able to tell.(and yes...the belts can be a bitch to get off)

Yes, once you remove the belts spin and shake each pulley. They should spin somewhat smooth and free without any wobbles. The water pump will have some resistance due to the impeller inside.

 

welp, i replaced all 3 of my belts today. still thinking im hearing a bit of a chirp, like SixtyDashOne is, as its just idleing & not when im giving it any gas. i guess next weekend ill take my belts back off & check the pulleys better! oh yeah, my milage is at 184k.

 

You could use a scope and pinpoint what is making the noise or remove belts and see when the squealing stops.

 

what kinda scope do u mean? if i removed the belts, then i just need to turn the pulleys & feel for resistance or what all should i do or need to do?
