terrible gas mileage 3.4L v6

99% of my driving is in the city. The range is usually 250 miles before the fuel light is on.

 

x2. my commute is low speed 6 miles and takes about 25-40 mins depending on traffic, time of day, weather, and which stupid people are on the road at that time

I will say a recent trip to mid-WV (Clarksburg) going down I-79 and back yielded a 19.8 mpg run. and that's with some hills and a few spirited shifts running 65-80mph

 

is there any truth to the idea the timing belt has stretched enough to affect mpg?

im just having a hard time thinking the belt has that much stretch to it that the fact it hasn't been replaced is hurting my mpg

if you never replace it then after a while it would just break. it's more like a tire than a rubber band. Toyota just uses CYA techniques to make sure it's in top shape.

 

I'm getting about 260 miles per tank is that okay 3.4 five speed ???

 

if you ran it empty that would be ~14 mpg. if you ran it until E/light on then that's ~16 mpg (within normal)

You'll do yourself a favor accuracy wise if you'll calculate real MPG vs guessing at miles per tank.
