Paint the tailpipe?

I was wondering if anyone has ever painted their tailpipe?

I saw on another forum where someone spray painted their tailpipe black with caliper paint. Although I thought it was a bit weird, I must admit it looked cool.

I am going to be getting a dynomax super turbo muffler #17748, and probably will be keeping the stock tailpipe and add a stainless steel tip.

I just hate to the look of the rusted tailpipe. Any suggestions?

 

I never hear of it but I would use BBQ paint because of the heat.

 

I would assume that I would need to do something about the rust before painting the tailpipe?

I don't think painting over rust is such a great idea.

 

I'm hopefully painting mine tomorrow. My tips are the only thing still chrome, so I'm sanding them down, including the rust, and hitting them with high temp BBQ paint!

 

they do make high heat rattle can paint ive used on old motorcycle exhausts. The paint is made for engine block and high heat applications. You can get it at walmart its made by Duplicolor and has a pic of an engine on the front...

It needs to be baked on. What worked for me is to paint the pipe and start the engine. when the pipe gets hot it will bake the paint and speed the drying process.

P.S. you can get high heat engine paint in any color you want

 

You should definately sand before you paint anything

rust adhesion wont handle the heat...tried it... stunk like hell. I actually painted the rusty headers on and old Honda Hurricane CBR1000F and the paint held up for a couple years as long as you heat the pipe up and properly bake the paint. And those headers got hot

 

heres a link for what the paint looks like its actually a ceramic paint. Meaning the paint forms a ceramic coating on the pipe. The baking hardens the ceramic and its good for 1200 degrees. Way more durable than BBQ paint

I personally would recommend you using the black ceramic engine paint, being that it is used for high temperatures.

 

Or you could go wild and get any color ceramic paint. Like red to match your truck... Ok that might be a little much but youd be the only one out there, all about the originality lol

 

Sorry I misread your post, I thought you wanted black tips. Any color engine paint will do as long as YOU like it

 

No red tailpipes! I'll go track down some of this high temp black ceramic paint...

So do you think that I could just paint the tailpipe with this ceramic engine paint over the rust? I really dont't feel like sanding all that away. lol

 

Everytime I paint something rusty I just sand it down to get the surface smooth. Then I go over with primer then the paint. If the rusty part isnt smooth I dont think that it will look good, but idk I havent tried it.

 

Agreed, Id just knock all the roughness down so its smooth or at least smoother and skip the primer (i dont think there is heat rated primer) the heat might cause the primer to have issues and start flaking.

 

I painted my tail pipe with some black BBQ paint. I like the way it looks ill try and post some pictures for you soon.
