Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm not anywhere near my truck for a few months so I can't go figure it out myself.

I've got a 2015 TRD OR and it comes with a steel spare. Going to do 5 tire rotation so I want to switch the spare to a matching OEM TRD OR alloy wheel. Question is, will that alloy wheel still work with the chain mounting gizmo under the bed? Do I just pop the center cap from the alloy wheel and then it mounts under the bed just like the steel wheel does? Any other issues I should be aware of?

    Thanks!

Modern radial tires should only be swapped front to back. I wouldn't recommend a 5 tire rotation.

    If they're unidirectional.

You can do a 5 tire rotation with multidirectional tires all you want. Just need to figure out what your tires are.

I've got KO2's, they can be done in a 5 tire rotation just fine. In fact BFG even has a recommened 5 tire rotation pattern for them.

But yes, many, many passenger tires meant for on road performance are not symmetric (i.e. they are unidirectional) and should really only be rotated front to back.

But back to the original question - how about mounting an alloy wheel in the under bed holder for the spare?

I haven't done it, but I was looking at it since I have a 5th of my new wheels. My only concern was the nice alloy rim getting beat up by the hanger, and if the hanger would fit through. Also the wheel being under there during the winter, and seeing all the road dirt and sandblasting that happens might ruin a wheel real quick.

My steel rims under my truck also look TERRIBLE. I had my ram for 10 years and when I pulled the spare the tire was flat, and the rim was rotted. I had never had it down or used it for 10 years(my stupidity)

You'll be fine. I have 265-75-16 under there. Just flip the wheel up if you worry about rock chips and protect the valve stem.

This also keeps the hanger from marring the outside of the rim. Do the 5 tire rotation and your spare will always be the same diameter as the rest of them. A set of tires lasts longer too, with the additional investment.

Did you have any issues fitting the 265/75-16 in there? I want to change my spare to match the rest of my tires.

Thanks everyone! Figured it was pretty straightforward but wanted to check. Thanks for the tips.

I guess this also means I don't need to buy a wheel with a center cap - a bunch of the used and refurbs don't come with center caps but that will be just fine.

You may also need to have a 5th TPMS programmed in at the dealership for your spare tire if you choose to have it. I have a TPMS in the spare but not programmed. I just prefer its metal valve stem over the plastic one.

actually the ECM won't recognize a 5th TPMS sensor, there is only space for 4. it wont throw a code as long as you keep the 4 tires with the matched sensors near the vehicle

Older Tacoma's stored 5 TPMS in the ECU and came with a TPMS in the spare (around 08/09 and earlier I think). I know a few people have reported space for 5 TPMS using Techstream on some trucks in 2012-2013 range. Certainly possible that at some point the ECU went down to only supporting 4, but there are certainly plenty of Tacomas that can and do store 5.

The same shit everyone else has.
Yep. No issues. I run a stock TRD sport wheel and 265/70 Duratrac as a spare. It mounts using the OEM mount just fine
