Whys that?

 

Got an alignment yesterday after replacing tie rods and lower ball joints. Couple of questions after replacing the tie rods...

Both inner tie rod boots had some oil puddled up in them. I'm guessing this is from a rack leak? Is it power steering fluid?


I also noticed up/down play in the driver side rack end. Do I need a new rack or is there something less major I can replace?

I'm not sure how long both the leak and play has been there, but everything feels fine while driving and the shop was able to get the alignment in spec. Is this something I should try to address asap? I can post a video of the play in the rack end if needed.

 

Just placed an order for the Demello Offroad slider group buy. Can't wait for it to get here. it'll take me sometime to save up, but debating on skids or a front bumper after. Originally was thinking skids.

 

Just a heads up, the 3RZ manual is a W59 and likely wouldn't hold the power of a 2jz for very long.

yea the leak is power steering fluid.. seal on both ends of the rack fail (wear and tear). I too found some excessive movement on the drivers side as well after launching it at Pismo trying to get some air this weekend. Coming back home felt some vibration in steering wheel over bumps, both inner and outter tie rods are ok. I wonder if i can do a yoke adjustment and help with that play?

 

In your case since rack is leaking, id recommend replacement

This is exactly why I asked. So, do you know what the difference is between a w58 and a w59?

The combo I am looking at is on Ebay, so the information they have very well may be incorrect.

 

Anybody have experience with All-Pro upper control arms? Debating on getting in the GB but I also want a bumper....

 

From what I know of the manual trannies in the older trucks, the W series was always paired with a 4cyl and the R series was always paired with a 6cyl or larger (there may be some exceptions). For lots of the older Celica guys the W58/2JZ paring seems sorta common, but there are two versions of the W58, one that allows you to attach a transfer case and one that just has a normal output shaft for a 2WD application (most likely what that 2JZ comes with). The bell housings on the W series are interchangeable with each other, and because of that it makes it easy to take the bell housing from a W58 and throw it on a W59 or really any other W series. The Wikipedia page for the W series transmissions seems to suggest that the W58 is one of the strongest W series transmissions, as this quote really hits that home "This transmission is popular as a replacement for weak stock transmissions in other vehicles." and this one "Toyota engineers have shown favor to the W58 over the rest of the 'W' series by including it in so many models and even building a stronger version for higher powered applications.". It even came stock on some 2JZ powered vehicles like the Lexus IS-300.

So I wouldn't use the W59 from one of our 4cyl trucks, I would find a 4WD compatible high-strength (might make it harder to find) W58 and use the bell housing that W58/2JZ comes with.

 

I have them and no issues at all. Bought them used and rebuilt them myself.

 

I also picked up my All Pro UCAs used from a member who definitely put some abuse to 'em, he rebuilt them recently, and so far I havn't had any problems.. I did repaint them. have yet to really wheel with them but have noticed a better ride overall, and alignment is much improved. Looking forward to putting them to work!

I been thinking about the Allpro uca's or light racing uca's. Reason why I'm considering LR's is where I live salty roads during the winter. Afraid of uni-ball corrosion

 

Yea a sealed ball def has advantages. There's a ton of salt here in NJ too, but I think as long as I clean them regularly during winter and keep the uni balls lubed I should be good. Tri flow dry lubricant was recommended
