My 2006 prerunner 4 cylinder standard access cab will start, but will not move. It seems like the parking break wont disengage or the breaks are stuck. I am in Hawaii so temperature isnt an issue. I recently shipped the truck on a barge so salt air/water may be an issue. It is on a slight inclined driveway that I park on every day. What should my first few steps be to fix/diagnose the issue?

I have an 06 sport with a 6 speed. A few weeks ago I had almost a similar issue. Turns out the retainer springs for the brake shoes in the drums broke. Two were broken on the passenger side and one on the driver side. These are the springs that hold the shoes to the back plate.

I was also parked on a slight incline uphill.

Jack up the rear end, support it, put it in neutral and see if you can spin the rear tires by hand.

Don't forget to chock the front wheels.

Sounds similar. What do I need to do? Can I fix it or do I call a tow truck?

If it is the springs, it can be an easy fix if you have the ability, or are comfortable doing a brake job.

Take the wheel off, then the drum, and inspect the shoes and hardware (springs).

Two M8-1.25x45 hex head bolts will screw into the drum to help pull them off.

A new hardware kit is lit $10-15.

    Did you see Holyfield19s advise?

You mentioned shipping on a barge. I've heard that the water between the Hawaiian Islands is very deep and rough. It would be my guess some heavy-handed barge employee went crazy applying the parking brake.

One can never have too many light bars.
My truck had this problem once. I then put it in drive and it worked just fine. :rimshot:

If the parking brake was engaged and the truck had a little bit of extra force applied to it, those springs could have snapped from excess pressure.

You can shift the truck into drive/reverse, correct?

If you put it in neutral will it roll?

If not, jack it up and try to spin the tires by hand.

Another thing may be the shoes or pads are stuck to the rotor or drum. I had a buddy whose brakes got stuck to the rotors or drums (we weren't sure if it was the front or back) before. It was a first gen and happened after driving through the river a lot, so it was subjected to a lot of water. It was parked for a few days right after and was a manual. He had to rock it back and forth in gear to get them to pop loose. It was sketchy, I thought he was gonna break something trying to get them to pop loose. When it did break free everything seemed fine. It was almost like the pads or shoes were so worn down they rusted to the rotor or drum.

I would go with Holyfield19's idea myself. My buddy was an idiot at times. I would rather take something apart to figure out why it wont work rather than force it and break something.

May be hard to get the drums off with the shoes locked up.

That's what the two bolts are for. There are two threaded holes on opposite side of each other. When they get threaded in and turned, it will walk the drum right off.

    Ask me how I know.

Hey, great idea Toyota!! Nice that they put a mechanism in to force the drum off, sucks beating on it with a hammer for an hour each wheel
