Thanks for sharing. I wasn't around in the 60's, but there sure is a bit of nostalgia thinking that anyone could build a car in their garage, or Honda could build a race car just for testing.
I dare say there are not many companies in the world who could afford to build the current power units. Especially just because they want to.

 

Ugh, comparing the NFL to F1...is sadly appropriate. A lot of the same arguments, safety starting to get in the way of spectacle, "let them play", etc. From a financial perspective, Jerry Jones is arguably the Bernie of the NFL (most influential owner, most popular team), and he pushed for the salary cap. But salaries are the only thing capped in the NFL, not budgets. They can spend as much on everything else as they want. $133m just to spend on the players salaries. I am guessing that they budget cap they are talking about for F1 would just be R&D+Production, right? J Jones pushed for a salary cap and equitable TV rights, and Bernie voted against a cap and the TV money in F1 is largely distributed as prize money with some teams like Ferrari getting bigger chunks just for being the old guard. Jerry's sport has skyrocketed in popularity (and parity) in the last 20 years, F1 has lagged. Bernie could take a few lessons from Jerry (I just threw up in my mouth a little...)

Mr Honda built an engine because he wanted to, then built a car to test it in, then built a car to race.
