First coat of wax?

After getting a new tacoma, how long did you wait till you put the first coat of wax?

 

actually..........probably a good idea to go ahead and claybar/polish/and wax it. it may look pretty clean and shiny, but there are contaminants that get caught in the paint during transportation and such,that need to be removed.

 

It is the BEST way to bond with your new vehicle!!

 

Did this on my New 08 Sentra the weekend afte I bought it...plus it was a black car and needed detail anyways

I think the reason MRzip is asking is because after a vehicle has new paint you are not supposed to wax it for at least 90-120 days according to PPG (paint company that supplies paint to pretty much all OEMs) However, most cars sit at least that long. From being manufactures then waiting to be shipped then being shipped to the dealer, then after a month you get the car. So most new cars can be waxed the day you get them unless it a special order and they expedite the delivery.

The reason i know this is my father owns a bodyshop in upstate ny and after we painted a nice black civic i thought it would be a nice touch to wax it for the customer...bad idea it ruined the clear coat and had to be buffed down and refinished with another coat of clear.

 

Thanks for all the replies! I was thinking that one needs to let the paint cure before the first coat of wax, but that may have been years ago before the new type paints that is in use today. The tacoma was built last month (August).

 

yeah..............paint needs to cure out, but the amount of time from factory to dealership is enough time for that occur.

 

I did mine within a couple weeks of having it. Like someone stated it's perfectly fine to wax it unless you ordered yours directly from the factory and pick it up the day of. Otherwise it'd be stated on the owners guidelines to let the paint cure.

 

My Taco was a special order that I drove home the day it fell off of the transporter. I'll wait as long as I can -- winter's coming -- before waxing. It will happen within thirty days.

When I sold/repaired Fords, a finish wasn't considered fully cured for one year. The PPG products used by our paint guy were considered fully cured within 90 days. I'll smear somebody's "wax" on mine at roughly 60 days from build. I'm not worried.

 

I could be wrong on this but I think I remember that you should wait about 180 or 80 days from being painted, before you wax. Because the paint underneath the surface is not dry yet. I'm not sure if that is any different if they dry the paint in one of those car paint drying buildings or whatever they call them. But why risk it? You can wait 180 days it will be fine.

 

If its 180 days then noone with a 2010 should be waxing because they didn't start producing them till August...


Also its not that long of a wait between factory to dealer, I had mine about 15 days after it was made and it wasn't ordered, I just put money on one they already had coming.

Hell, my 2009 hasn't even been in existance 180 days

After every wash since I bought the truck I decided too use Meguiar's spray wax.It has been perfect. The truck stay clean longer even in rain and the paint still feels smooth as silk with no oxidation. I now use all adam's polishes and products and washing steps. The water just beads off the truck and I use adam's great white drying towel and I dry the truck in under 10 minutes.You will need at least 2 towels because once full water they don't dry the same. just ordered a new product called Turtle Wax Black Box, specifically designed for black vehicles. anyone tried it yet? I will let you know how it works out.

Waxed my BSP with Turtle Wax Black Box today. It was a lot of work but looks awesome!!!

I will. It took me all day so it was dark when I finished. I'll try and get some tomorrow before it gets dirty again. The dirt should just fall off it now though.
