So, I have a 2014 DC 4X4 OR with 16K miles. When I punch it, I hear a ticking noise form the engine. Asked the service dept. about it and got a bunch of BS with no action. Sounds like a lean condition to me. Still on warranty. Should I raise hell with them? Would a CAI/ CAT back system help? My last Harley did this from the factory. Opening the airbox and adding new open exhaust slip-ons cured it.
    I'm open to any input.

running 87? Try some mid grade.

There is also a TSB to address this issue.

dont worry about it, classic taco tick.

That stated there is a reflash for our trucks for pinging. Might have the dealer reflash.

Yeah, mid grade. I'll have them do a reflash and then try mid grade.

Should be the opposite. More airflow = more fuel. Most motorcycle engines require a jet kit or at least a carb adjustment when opening up the airflow. Glad you got the Taco taken care of!

    The saga continues....
Hot weather in AZ now and pinging again. Dealer said it can't be reflashed with a different program and that I should try mid grade again. Also said that "we are still doing winter gas which has more alcohol and should change when summer gas arrives...WTF.
Might a cooling shroud from Bulletproof cool it down more and eliminate the pinging? It is predetonation (pinging) and not ticking.
    Thoughts?

Any thoughts on the Bulletproof cooling shroud?

Damnit!!! I was asking people to make that years ago!!!!!!!! Now I finally see it....It will help to force the air through. If you ever get the chance to look at a 4Runner with the hood open, you will immediately notice that they have extensive shrouding compared to the Tacoma. Their coolant temps naturally run lower under heavy useage than the Tacoma because of this. They do not need this cooling panel. For us, it will help some. Not as much as having it on the sides as well, but it will still be an improvement.

FJ's and 4Runners alike. :frusty: A lot of parts I look for have to come from either of those......

OP, you said you have been using mid-grade gas. You live in AZ correct? Have you tried getting on "E" then filling up with say a quarter to half tank of premium?

    What are your coolant temps?

Does it ping at night when it is cooler outside? What is the temp of "cooler"?

Does it ping on mid-grade? (Since we already know it pings on 87.)

You have the air injection system, so that will make things a tad warmer, unless for some reason it isn't working right and possibly stuck in a manner which is basically open. Then it would get a lot hotter.

I'm starting to think that it is the gas itself. Which brand do you use? If it isn't top tier, definitely switch to it.

Then go by the lowest grade which doesn't ping.

Yeah. Need to continue with higher grade/ brand name fuel experimentation. Will report results.
Pings when hot, pulling up hill and accelerating....not limited to punching it. Temp gauge not reading excessively hot. Reflash did nothing to improve pinging. Yeah, I have been running cheap gas.
    Thanks for input.

Pretty amazing the stuff a dealer will say to wiggle out of a situation.

Im in AZ, 2013 tacoma, and I use mostly frys gas, run 89 when driving on highway,91 when towing and 87 in town. I have no pinging and havent needed to do the reflash tsb. It may be the gas you use
