Im writing an essay in english class right now and Im stuck. I need some more ideas/help!

To some people gun control is a crime issue, to others it is a rights issue. Gun control is a safety issue, an education issue, a racial issue, and a political issue, among others. Within each of these issues there are those who want more gun control legislation and those who want less. On both sides of this issue opinions range from moderate to extreme. Guns are not for everyone. Certain individuals cannot handle a firearm safely, and some individuals choose to use firearms inappropriately. Our society has passed laws regulating the ownership and use of firearms, and more legislation is being considered. Most of this legislation restricts, to some degree, the rights of individuals to possess or use firearms.

The second amendment states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” was put in place to protect the citizens of America; So that the free people of this country could defend themselves as a nation and as individuals. The militia referred to cannot be construed as meaning the Army or National Guard, it will be composed of free citizens of this country. The Revolutionary War was won with the help of militias, private companies, and armed citizens. Without the winning of that America would not be the one you know it to be today. Who knows we could all have silly accents and be a detachment of Great Britain.

Today the second amendment sparks many heated and passionate debates. There is more disagreement and less understanding about this right than any other current issue regarding the constitution. To me it is a no brainer, we as American citizens have the right to own guns, Period. But as we all know there are restrictions on any and everything handled by the government. I do believe that certain gun laws are necessary and are there to protect us, but trying to disarm the citizens of America and erase the second amendment is utterly insane. The rational given for most modern gun control legislations is “Crime Control” or “crime prevention” if you will. President Bill Clinton passed an act called the “Brady act,” the act required individuals to undergo a criminal background check before purchasing a firearm and included a five day waiting period. I agree one hundred percent with the background checks; criminals do not need to be able to walk in off the street, buy and gun, and turn around and then kill someone. However, the five day waiting period is a little absurd. Say for example, a woman wants to buy a handgun for home defense. After the purchase of the gun she goes home empty handed to wait the five days, that night someone breaks into her home and kidnaps her five year old son. If she had been able to take home the gun that night she would have been able to defend her home and protect her family. Today the five day waiting period is no longer in effect but the Brady Act is and has blocked over one million firearm purchases and over half were either felons or fugitives from justice.

Crime is not the only issue related to firearm ownership. Hunting is a popular sport and in some parts of the country, an important source of food. What is going to happen to the men and women who depend on their firearms as a tool for gathering food? In some parts of this country people cannot just get in their car and drive to the supermarket, they need guns so that they can provide food for their families. Hunting is also a big part of wildlife population control. Every day more and more forests are cleared to build new homes and expand cities, where do all the animals go that used to live there? Soon they overpopulate an area and have to go further for food. This leads to them wandering into cities and into highways and onto country roads where they are killed with our large metal death machines. By successful population control we can reduce the negative effects of over population and these animals can sustain a normal life.

Owning a firearm is a right and with that right comes great responsibility. If taught properly a firearm can be a very useful tool, for sporting, hunting, and could even save your life some day.

What a great subject to write about for an essay! I would suggest to make sure to separate fact from fiction with these laws. Such as more gun laws will result in less crime which is untrue, In England their crime rate and break in rate has gone up. And make sure to provide it from hard fact data.

Why is open carry not allowed in Texas? I've never understood that.

If it wasn't for the ARMED citizen on the revolutionary war. The Minute Man wouldn't exist to fight the British. right?

Switzerland crime rate is low REALLY LOW. Out of 6 million in their population 2 million of them own a gun. 1 of every 3 practically.

This reminds me of the pro war speech I did. got 75/75 points, out of 10 ish students I was the first pro war person.

Elaborate on the second amendment, where it states "shall not be infringed."

EDIT: I didnt see that you mentioned the Revolutionary war. Go in deeply on all of your topics.

Might want to add something about Kennesaw, GA (I think that's the town.)

They passed a law that stated every household has to have a firearm in it. Guess what happened to crime rates :)

What happened to the accidental discharge rates??

    Either way-

No idea, but think about it this way.

You're a criminal residing in/near Kennesaw before the law gets passed.

After the law gets passed, you KNOW that there is a weapon in the house.

Are you going to take the chance?
