Just a small 35 mile section of the John Muir Trail, starting at Toulumne Meadow and exiting at Devil's Postpile (Red's Meadow). It's the first backpacking overnighter with my wife, so we're doing a smaller segment than previously planned. I don't want her hating life.

Hammock city, my friend. That's my chair when I'm backpacking.

Awesome! I'd love to do that with my lady...
Did you have to get your wilderness permits 6 months in advance?
    What is your time frame?

Yeah you have to get permits at least 180 days in advance. We got ours in February for an August trip. August 13-17 is when we'll be out on the trail. Just taking it easy at 7 miles per day so we have half the day to enjoy the scenery, stop when we want, and so I can fish while she sits in the hammock and reads. I wanted to go in July, but it filled up so quick. August is fine with me.

Yeah we're planning for them. Head nets, long sleeves, and repellent. Some areas are worse than others from what I've read, and each year is different. This has been a very dry winter, so there should be much less standing water unless the monsoons kick in good and leave pools and swampy areas.

I don't know what you were looking at in dehydrators but Nesco makes great dehydrators that aren't all that much money. I don't know anybody who has had a complaint about theirs, and haven't noticed any on any backpacking forums over the last 10 years or so either.

I was looking at the Excaliburs because I wanted more square footage for larger batches. They get stellar reviews. A bit pricey, but I thought it was worth it.

Can anyone recommend a good headlamp for backpacking?
I'm headed over to REI in about an hour and am not too sure which ones are good etc.
I have to be ready for my trip next week.

I love my Black Diamond Spot. The current model is awesome. Love my Petzl XP for around camp, but the Spot is great on night hiking. I think there is a Storm model I think, that looked pretty great also.

I have the bd storm and love it. Great headlamp and it's lasted over a year so far. I also have the icon which is insanely bright but overkill for most stuff

Yea I've got two of the Black Diamond Storm. Both a few years old and still trucking. Only downside is they take 4 batteries and can burn through them quickly if you don't dim the light when you don't need the full 100 lumens.

This doesn't help, but maybe it will.. REIoutlet.com typically puts them on sale for 24.99-29.99 fairly regularly. That's where I bought both of mine.

I have the Black Diamond Icon with the battery pack in the back. It's kind of heavy with 4xAA's but lasts a long time and is bright as heck. The wide dimming range is nice. I canted the battery pack off to the side so I can lay down with it on and read in the tent. I maybe go through one, maybe two sets of 4xAA lithium batteries in it a year and use it very often.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys...I ended up buying the Black Diamond Spot and not the Storm or ReVolt just to save a little bit of money. I wanted something that's bright enough when it's pitch black out, will last a while & I don't have to have a surplus of batteries on me, and saving money is also good. Mine looks like this:
