Well with rain on todays forecast I figured I would try him out in my room again. I was a bit worried as I didn't get to wear him out as much this morning. Came back at lunch and he was sleeping so hard that I was able to walk up to him and startle him.

Gonna give it a shot a few more times and if he continues to be good I'll take the kennel back and spend that money on some more toys and a new harness/dog pack for him :D.

He is about 1 year and 4 months so still young. Currently acting like a teenager and pushing his limits with me off leash. At 8 months I started crating him after he ripped apart a chair and chewed up my closet door pretty good. Maybe he is finally learning haha

My dog is crated whenever neither my girlfriend nor I are home...basically because we have cats that he kind of gets along with, but not always.

I don't really feel bad though because his crate is big enough to curl up and sleep in...which he is doing right now next to the couch haha.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
This. Our's is about 18 months and chews when bored. I don't feel bad when we are at work. She likes her crate. Never forget they are a den animal, and a crate is more natural than most realize. And for their safety as well as our homes. The best advice I have, patience and exercise until they can be trusted out alone.

Annie was crated until she was about 2 and Zoie was good enough to let out about 1.

Haha while I agree most dogs will like a kennel. 8 hours in one is a bit much. Considering most get put in them right after sleeping all night. Ash is happy to enter a kennel. What goes on when I leave I have no clue. I found him like this twice now :p. Silly pup.

    Get a bigger crate? :notsure:

I always came (still do 99.9% of the time) home to let them out for the 20 minutes or so I'm home. Thankfully they are good with that.

Dog needs a way bigger crate. The dog needs to be able to sit up all the way and have it not touch their head.

    This might help.

That's a xl travel crate, he can stand up fully and easily turn around. I have the 5'x5' outdoor kennel but still seems small to me. I couldn't imagine finding a place to put a large enclosure inside. I am just gonna hope that he continues to be good in my room.

I hope you guys can notice that the crate is on the side...

Crate looks big enough. If it were standing up :D

The ideal size is one which allows the dog to turn around and to stand in. Riley's is a large one and when he was Cone-tained, he could still get in and out (with some fussing on his part). He weighs right around 110#.

What OldManTan (and others) said. Looks like a corner on that crate has been chewed off? Like you said I'd sell it but would then get a double door Ruff Tough Kennel add handles and get a Mud River cover for winter. If sized correctly I doubt he can roll a Ruff Tough. Being Ash though hard to say LOL
    [IMG]

With that said if I can't make it home during the day to let him out for a bit I pay the $20 a day for doggie day care for the pup. The old Toller has the run of the house but it took a few years for him to earn that privilage. From 5 AM to 6 AM is their "job" time every day and I try to wear them down with mental and physical exercise. Pup just turned 6 months and even doggie day care doesn't wear him down now but mental exercise does at least for awhile. Obedience commands are good in more ways than one.

I ripped out the jump seats in my AC and built a dog platform but there are times a crate comes in handy outside of the home too. There is a growing number of trainers that believe a crate should be smaller than bigger as Ian said just big enough to stand and turn around in, and its OK for the back to touch the top of the crate as long as they can turn around.

Yeah, after a month of kenneling I left the gate open so he could choose to roam my room or sleep in his kennel. He decided to chew it haha. Two days now he has been left in my room with no damage. A few more and the outdoor kennel will be going back to the store.
