Not too shabby. Been moving around good with the aid of crutches. I got this little ice/water thing that has a pad that circulates the cold water around the knee. Really helps keep the swelling in check.

It is hard as hell getting decent sleep. I normally roll all over the place. You don't move too quick without being reminded to take it slow!

Thank you for asking. I'm glad the paint job is taking shape.

Just stuff your mouth full o' cookies whenever she asks about it. Then tell her how yummy they are when you are done chewing, and she'll forget all about the headlights.

Trust me. This is advice coming from a fellow woman.

Don't say I never did anything nice for ya buddy!!

Did it!! 2nd coat on. Gotta admit, I can still see some roller marks, but it's definitely better overall than it was before the 2nd coat, so it was worth it!!

I also washed and rollered the top edges of the bed rails, because all 3 (tailgate & 2 sides) were rusty and scratched to hell. It was very satisfying rolling over those!! :)

Until my neighbor asked me if I sanded first.

    :homer: DOH!

Whatevs, it looks better, was easy, and cost next to nothing. I'm still happy. :D

Time to enjoy the rest of this beautiful Friday!!! Setting up croquet now!! :)

Did you use full strength, un-thinned rustoleum, and a nap roller? Hard to tell from tiny pics on my phone. Looks good either way. I've always thinned it like 50% or more with naptha or mineral spirits and used a foam roller. It takes a lot of coats, but it self levels really well and has very little orange peel, and the roller marks just disappear in a few seconds.
Also keep in mind that rustoleum is nowhere near as durable as catalyzed automotive polyurethane that would normally be used to paint a vehicle. You can also(accidentally or not) wipe rustoleum off with gasoline, and pretty much any other petroleum based solvent even after its dried for years, the sun will fade it much faster, and it scratches easier. However it's easy and cheap to fix if that happens, and as you can see, it looks pretty damn good for the money and effort. Anyway, nice job, let's see the pics from coat #2.

Matt!! You're back!! And you even complimented my topper's paint job!! Thanks buddy!

I basically did nothing I was advised to do in terms of thinning it, sanding/prepping, or doing many coats repeatedly. I took all the various advice I was given, then picked the cheapest and easiest sounding aspects of it, and made my own plan out of it. ;)

I have to say, I chose the roller option over spray paint (in spite of looks of disgust and disbelief by auto paint store employees) because for me personally, I felt I'd have better control with a roller at getting even coverage. Spray paint can be tough to apply evenly, at least for me.

Yes, I used full strength, un-thinned rustoleum and a nap roller. Hey man, at least I know I got the right type of nap on my roller, because I asked the Home Depot lady which one to get and they know everything!! ;)

I did wind up with some roller marks after the 2nd coat. Was able to disguise them better the 2nd time, but it's pretty obvious that there will always be SOME rollermarks using this method. Sounds like thinning it could make the difference with that problem.

Close up, the Rustoleum'd topper now has a textured appearance similar to vinyl, or pleather, or your vehicle's interior dash. I could see some people not liking this/being surprised by this. But I like it. Actually, I love it!! I think it looks really cool!! :)

Yeah, I realize this is not the most durable method for long term whatever. But I could care less. I'm all about the cheap, easy way to make the damn thing black and shiny again. And I did it!!

I also roller-ed the top edges of all the rails around the truck bed. They were rusty from years of abuse from the topper scratching them. And no, I didn't sand first, or prep in any way. Although I did wash them first. And made sure they were dry before applying the paint. :D

When are you coming to visit us?????????????????? You two gotta get out here one of these days!! :)

EDIT: BTW, thanks for the advice way back, to try Rustoleum and a roller/foam applicator! Granted, I completely mangled the specifics of your plan in the overall method I went with, but the basic principles are what you advised and I love the result!! Thanks buddy! : )

You did good by not thinning it. Thinning Rustolium always reduces its UV resistance. It would fade a lot faster if thinned. It's still gonna fade, just not right away.

I do plan to take some final pics and share them, probably today.

I ripped that paper off the windows last night and it was super satisfying!! Had Eric put it on the Taco to see what it'd look like. Looked good!!

But of course then I noticed a few little spots that need touching up, once it was up at that height and I had a better view than when it was on the ground.

So I'm going to grab a teeny brush and the paint ONE MORE TIME, then once that's done I'll give y'all some pics of the final final final product. :)

Unthinned rustoleum (and all thick enamels really) have a lot of orange peel, which is why body shops color sand and buff paint after its sprayed for the smooth glassy look. I'm sure the nap roller helped with the texture look as well. Can't wait to see the pics! And it would be great to come out to Oregon...after I finish roughly 2.4 million critical projects first.
