That is an interesting article. Thanks for sharing. So its not a van motor, its a car motor.

 

That article has a few errors, but is still an interesting look and comparison with the updated D4-S equipped 2GR-FXE.

I feel that while the 2GR-FXE was appropriate for use in the GS (and the 2GR-FSE in the IS/GS), I'm sure the 2GR-FKS will be getting some more truck-oriented tuning, both mechanically (valve timing, intake length, etc.) and electronically (VVT-i, Atkinson control, etc.).

There are other cars and trucks that share similar engines, take a look at the 1UR-FE in the Tundra versus the 1UR-FSE in the LS460 for example, they are very different engines for very different purposes, and yet share the same 1UR engine architecture.

Wise statement - I couldn't agree more. However, I'm not a patient person and I can't wait until these roll up to So Cal from TJ; I hope to be the first in line to grab one. I got burned by getting one of the first FJ Cruisers of the boat - turned out to be a lemon. Toyota bought it back and I took the check and got the exact same FJC, which never had an issue in the 7 years I owned it.

Yep, there be some initial bugs with the '16, and I didn't learn my lesson, but hopefully Toyota will stand by their product. After driving everything else out there nothing excites me like this new Tacoma. It's way cool too to hear any new information - good or questionable - so thank you Jeff. This certainly helps us put the pieces together while we're dry humping this site until Toyota releases something definitive.

 

This guy doesn't get it. The Atkinson cycle will not effect the overall power output as the engine will be able to switch to an otto cycle on the fly. Max power will be generated by the Otto cycle. He mentions this but

He also doesnt understand how Toyota manages the Otto cycle/Atkinson cycle switch. He mentions the VVT-ie only being available for the Lexus. This engine is imported from the Lexus 2GR. Additionally, its the VVT-ie that makes switching between the Otto and Atkinson cycle possible.

Unless he thinks Toyota is releasing just an Atkinson cycle engine with no Otto cycle option...

 

Yeah, seems like the author thinks that...based on how the article is written.

 

I don't understand all these engine name codes and such. Does this just mean this motor is a revised Highlander V6 motor?

I bet the Tacoma engineers browse threads like these just to laugh at the guesses and "claims" that people throw out. I know if I were them I would make a profile just to throw out garbage information just to get everyone all riled up and arguing with each other. Just imagine how nice everything will be when late july comes and all the built up angst will end.

Doesn't bother me it's a template taken from a car but I wish Toyota would give the new Tacoma it's own platform that the Tacoma, and 4Runner can use.

 

Why do you care how much r&d it takes? Does it affect your paycheck? It doesn't affect mine so I don't care. If they decided to go back to a 22re because it's "cheaper" would you defend that too?

It does have its own basically. It'll be the only Toyota with that particular 2gr form. Whereas if it were the dual vvti 1gr, that would be in 3 different Toyota models. Looks like the new van motor will actually cost them more, too bad for the people who care how much profit Toyota makes.

 

Im sure Toyota would have loved to use the 1GR. They are using it in the new Hilux. If you have issues with the engine Toyota has picked out, write Washington a letter.

 

What I found interesting in the article was the pic of the 6000 RPM redline. The pics five months ago showed a 5800 RPM redline. Toyota is boosting the RPM's apparently.

Trying to get the HP number up with higher redline? If so, that indicates peak torque won't be much more than the 4.0, lamentably.

 

If my truck had a car engine in it wouldn't it become a truck engine once placed in the truck. If it had a girl engine in it could I marry it/her?
