This may sound dumb, but I drove my new 2011 for over a year before realizing that when I was out of 4WD I was in FWD. (I live on a dirt road in a rural area). For many years my main machine was a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer LTD (More expensive than a Cadillac back in those days, power 4-way seats, cruise, etc). Anyway, my neighbors with Ford pickups and similar had to get out and lock the front hubs manually to get 4WD, while the Wagoneer could be done from the dashboard with a vacuum motor on the front axle. Tightest possible turning circle, too. I miss that vehicle! When I bought the Tacoma, I figured it was rear wheel drive when out of 4WD. Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone else this clueless? PS: My favorite car is a '93 Subaru Impreza AWD, and so far the local dirt-road-to-town and back champ. I would not trade that little bugger for two golden Hummers.

I highly doubt you're in fwd when you're out of 4wd considering the truck is rwd bias. If it is then you have some serious problems with your truck.

As stated above the Tacoma is rear wheel when in 2WD.

What proof do you have of this? Power shouldn't go to the front in 2HI, truck is RWD. If your front isn't disengaging and your rear is there's something very wrong.

    Could you provide more details?

I'm not buying it. I think this is going to require video.

You were right in the first phrase. Everything else was just more proof.

The axles turn in the front the diff doesn't that maybe what you as seeing it's not front drive. The front diff only engages in 4WD.

OK, I stand corrected. Several things prompted me to ASSume my Tacoma was in FWD. Sometimes I feel that kind of grabbiness in the front when on pavement after being parked for a while, and the vehicle's unusual performance while in 2WD on a muddy stretch on the dirt road to where I live. Apparently the SR5 traction control stuff works way better than expected. Thanks for all your replies, some which made me smile. Too funny, people!

    No mods whatsoever!
You must have one of those rare FWD diesel Tacoma's. Lol. Too funny. Had to snicker at the responses.
