That sucks. Make sure you do the mod on the replacement. I always wonder if buying from craigslist is a good idea. You are probably getting it from a crook that has been stealing them in your area.

The original page 1 video showing how easy it is to remove the tailgate does not seem to work. Is there another video showing this process?

I've never lost a tailgate with this mod either.

My only suggestion is to move the head of the screw for the hose clamp around to the back so you can only get at it with an end wrench.

Good point. I have never lost a tailgate either, with this mod. A while back, all the trucks in my neighborhood had thiers stolen. Mine was the only one that wasn't. Mind, the tailgate was in the down position when I came out, so they tried, but didn't get it with this mod. When the other neighbors found what I did, they couldn't believe something so simple, could stop the theft.

Yep I found it thanks. The very first vid did not work but I scrolled through the videos and found it. Wow that's fast. Poor manufacturing idea. Just ordered both an ideal turn key clamp and pop and lock bolt codable tailgate lock through Amazon. Thanks for the information!

Secured my tailgate today with one of these bad boys. Bought 2 clamps but realized when putting it on that you only need 1 on the passenger side ('06 Tacoma). They were 98 cent each so I guess I can live with the extra...

I do think I will go back and rotate it so the screw head is tucked under and not out in the open when you let down the tailgate. I know this won't stop a determined thief, he would just need a screwdriver. Hoping that the added difficulty will deter him to someone else's less secure truck, just as long as it's not a Taco....

I've had my tailgate stolen when my Tacoma was about two years old. Its a crappy feeling.

Regarding your mod, no disrespect, but what's to prevent someone from simply loosening the hose clamp (which is what the "mod" is and stealing the tailgate?

There are several actual modifications for the tailgate latch that secure it with a key and are reasonably priced. All you gotta do is Google for them. That's what I did. I think the one I got was around $30. Speaking of which I need to go lock mine...:)

There are definitely more secure ways to protect it, as you point out. But from a thief's point of view, if they have to spend more than a few seconds trying to get it off then they're most likely gonna just skip it and find an easier target.

    This ^^^^

Every truck I have had, Ive had a simple hose clamp on it, and never lost a tailgate, yet others around me have. In fact, over the last 20 years, Everyone I know, that has used a hose clamp, has never lost a tail gate. Many thieves don't carry tools, and don't want to take more than a min to take your shit. Even with tools, this is gonna take a few mins to defeat.

I agree this stops the guy thats lookin to geab it quick and move on. If they want it bad enough theyll get it. But the quick thief will move on to another with this mod.

I have a folding hard cover that secures my tailgate, but I still want this lock. The reason is I often haul long items and I have the tailgate down. All it takes is the right bump and the whole tailgate pops loose. Now it's only hanging by the side cables and camera wires. I'd rather not think about the damage that would cause.

I just did that on both sides. Thanks for the tip. I cannot believe that I bought a new Tacoma and didn't even notice the tailgate had a lock or not. Thanks again.
