New Product AEM "Short Ram Intake" 2005-2015 4.0 v6 CARB LEGAL 22-681C

Hey everyone, whats up?? AEM apparently, back in march, made an awesome CARB legal intake for our trucks. Us people who have a 2012 and newer tacoma, v6's in particular, probably are familiar with the struggle of finding any intake that is carb legal since the TRD one does not fit our trucks and every other cold air intake eliminates the hydrocarbon filter that makes the stock intake carb compliant. All this kit consists of is a nice mandrel bent induction tube, a 90 degree bend pipe and most importantly an airflow accelerator bell thats very similar in design to the TRD cold air intake. The kit also includes an AEM high flow dry flowing air filter (but you can run any replacement filter you please, im currently running toyotas TRD high flow air filter) It's a nice little upgrade, it makes alittle more induction noise because the intake resonator is gone and throttle response is slightly better in the mid range because the tube is larger and has smoother bends. I think its a fantastic product and priced nicely. uses stock airbox..... filter probably filters less than OEM filter.... you get no gains and worse filtering.

Any "gains" you get are simply placebo, the "better airflow" you think your getting due to the smoother bends etc, are completely negated by the fact that those bends are before the filter / airbox. The tube itself is no bigger than stock, and infact there probably isnt much noise increase as the resonator is part of the stock airbox which is still used. Its a waste of 271 bucks. Unless your into spending that much money on looks alone.

And in fact this probably REDUCES performance due to the fact its a metal pipe that conducts engine bay heat better increasing air intake temps vs the stock plastic tube.

 

Um ok... You don't have to jump down my throat buddy. But I thought this was a decent upgrade, especially for people who just want something nice under the hood and for those like myself who are stuck with having to be carb compliant. The metal tube vs plastic is a long proven invalid argument because plastic gets hot too. If you don't like it, or don't want it, you don't have to buy, but you don't need to squat down and take a shart in the thread. But its half the price of non carb approved cold air intakes and does just fine.. Nothing more, nothing less. And of course it filters alittle less, how else will more air get through in any performance filter?? And on the hot days where I live ive actually seen grams per second increase and intake charge degrees lower on my ultraguage when compaired to the stock. And since it still uses the stock box there is plenty of engine protection.. And the intake resonator on the stock tube is part of the intake tube, its on the part of the tube that is nearest to the fender.

Nope, although it'd be awesome to work for summit racing equipment. just thought id share some product information for those of us burdened by the California air research board.

 

The burden is easy to overcome, just switch to stock before smog check.

 

And then have to wait for a drive cycle for all of the readiness monitors to work. Personally I would rather not do that. But thats just me.

 

Nah you're not resetting the ecu when switching intakes. Drive cycle monitoring wont change.

 

It still may not have the correct a/f ratios. It's usually beneficial to disconnect the bettery and start the fuel trims from a blank slate. It's more precise over time. Thats what I was taught at universal technical institute anyway.

i bet if you actually did some tests the difference would literally be nothing between the stock unit and this..... yet your 271 bucks less rich. To each their own... but this is nothing more than a pretty piece of pipe to replace the same sized plastic piece of pipe of the stock intake.

If you think im a salesman, please take time out of your lives to look through my posts. I'm no salesman, just an enthusiastic enthusiast. Its honestly sickening how much hate enthusiasts of the same vehicle give each other on here. Same team people. I know intakes arent the most 'popular' subject in the automotive community as a whole , but I personally thought this was an ok upgrade and that it was kinda smart on aem's part, although when buying this I knew it was only going to be engine dressup anyway. *smh* the info is here for anyone who wishes to utilize it. Ok so firstly,

It's not a "Ram air" as the title states, let's not confuse people.

And secondly, the only thing that's really getting effected is the filter change. The tubing is purely cosmetic. You can sit he re and argue both sides of plastic vs metal, but in the end it's still thin tubing in the engine bay

 

Yea but doesn't the stock intake have more of a smoother bend whereas this one has a solid 90
