2WD Reg Cab tire recs

Has anyone put a larger tire on their standard 2WD Regular cab. The 215/70/15 seems a bit small and I'm wondering what the largest size can be used w/o clearance issues. I'm thinking 235/75/15...... This would be w/o a lift kit. Just trying to determine what gear ratio I'll need to order to accommodate the tires.

Hi, if yu go to that size in 75 series you speedometer will read 5.2% slow. 60 MPH indicated will be 63.5 MPH, not a huge error but enough to maybe make the difference between getting a ticket, or not if you are speeding a bit. If yours is like mine with stock tires(mine are Firestone) 65 MPH indicated is really about 60 Mph actual.. The size that will give a correct spedo reading is 225/70-15. Toyota does all the people who always speed a favor with this huge speedometer error. On my truck the spedo error is 7.7% and the odometer is off by 1.5% measured by interstate mile marker over 100 miles.(the odometer reads 101.5) Have measured the odometer error over this distance on several different interstate runs and it remains real constant. My plans are to put the 225-70-15 on if I dont go to larger 16" wheels.

At this point I want to put a tire on that actually looks right on the truck and then change gearing to give me the performance i feel is missing for a truck and the rpm i desire on the highway. My guess is at this point something around 3.73 -1 . I think this gear ratio was available on some V6 trucks like the X-Runner.

It was my understanding the dealer could "plug your truck in" to the computer and adjust the speedo according to gear ratio and/or tire size. There must be some sort of calibration available as there are several different gear ratios and tire sizes available depending on model.

I have the Dunlops & know actual tire dimensions vary according to brand. I'm going to check out the H/W markers to see where my truck stands....

When I asked my dealer about correcting the spedo, I got the "Deer in the Headlights Look". Let us know if you are sucessful.

 

Will do, there might be some instruction about the speedo in service manual too.

I ditched the 215/70-15's and installed 225/70-15's, looks much better bought Firestone Destination LE's, put the Dunlops on my Ranger which OEM uses 225/70-15's.

I ended up buying an 05 prerunner tonight, but I had looked at the "regular" 4cyl models for a while before pulling the trigger. The standard wheel and tire combo on the 4cyl trucks looks horrible. I prefer a stock or OEM+ look and always thought that the jeep liberty 16" steelies would look good with a decent (not huge) tire on them.

Most of the wheel upgrades I see on 2nd gen 4cyls are a joke...Picture a really cheap 15" or 16" rim with black spokes and a polished lip. Fail.

BTW I have seen a 235/75/15 on the stock rims, and it makes it look like a mini prerunner for what it's worth. It looked OK I guess, but seemed like it needed to come up an inch or two in the front to be balanced.

im runnin 225/60/18, so that translates to if i remember correcty a 29" tire

no rubbing issues but gearing wise i wouldn't go any bigger if you don't want to be rear-ended by a prius trying to get on the freeway

Hmmmmm, kinda harsh words...but what a lot of people don't understand, at least from my experiences, is that when it comes to 5-lugs, there aren't really a whole lot of options for wheels. On my 08, the offset for the wheels had to be crazy positive to clear the caliper on the front brakes. I really wanted a negative offset wheel and a wheel with the "deep-dish" look to it, but they're really hard to find for the 5-lug.

I running a 225/70/16 and I plan on going up to a 31inch tire once I've got my lift on, but first I need to add some power to even get it moving. It's a tough world for us 5 lugs when it comes to modding or upgrading wheels and tires, but they're out there...you just gotta look for them. Just my .02. Good luck!

 

Next year I'll be switching to 15x8 +6 wheels plus a 235/70/15 tire. Not only will it look a hell of a lot better, but it'll correct the speedometer reading (which reads fast on stock tires.)

Supposedly 15" steel wheels just barely scrape the outside of the caliper, but that's an easy fix. At least a few people here run these wheels.

16x8, 0 Offset + some 31" BFG All terrain tires, like the toyota tacoma concept with the satoshi grill. Ready Lift + stock fender flares unpainted.

 

I have 30x9.5x15 on mine. my spedometer says I'm going a little slower than I really am.

I put 235/70/15' on my stock rims and it looks a little better in proportion to the wheel well and my speedometer is exact compared to my gps.

The wheel is .5in wider and the tire slightly less than .5 wider. My a dramatic difference in the stance and appearance of the truck. It all depends on your goals. Mine was a better stance without the MPG robbing effect of a larger wheel/tire combination. Keep in mind if you go to larger tires is costs more money. The wife's truck is 2wd and won't see much more than a gravel road. Firestone LE's are a nice highway tire a couple of generations old by now. If you look at the Bridgestone line of tires they have all the lastest/greatest tire technologies, the Firestone line usually gets the hand me down tire tech. Nothing wrong with the Firestone (contrary to the Ford Exploder tire issue from several years ago). Her truck still gets the listed city/highway fuel numbers.

 

I have run 30x9.5x15's mounted on 05' Jeep wheels on my base truck with absolutely no rubbing at all. The speedo seems to be about 2-3 mph slow compared to GPS.
Here's some pics to show a before/after. Not sure if I'm going to keep this setup yet or not.

You wouldnt realy need to do a gear swap as small of an increae 235 would do.At 7% change or so, you would jump 1 ratio, so 4-5% sorta puts you in the middle. I'd do it though just to return some power back + a bit more.
I'm wondering of those Bilstein 5100s fit 2wd with the adjustable positions... put at the .84" ....in case you wanted to balance the look out if needed.
Based on Bluetoac08's truck ,your truck should look good.

For what it's worth, I've been told that the 5100's won't fit on a 5 lug by a bilstein dealer.

SAW coilovers and the TC UCA kit seem to be the only aftermarket parts made for the 5 lug that let you adjust the front.
