I have found that the percent of people that use the word torque and know what it means is about 2%. People will bang on all day about how awesome winding up 2 stroke dirt bikes is, then in another breath talk about how the only thing that matters is low torque.

The problem here is that Tacoma now weights too much, so The only real place Atkinson can save some fuel is idle/super heavy traffic.
Cruising is less likely to see Atkinson cycle on ever (maybe on some perfectly flat road at 50 MPH. )
If you have scanguage take a look at GPH numbers. If you have multiple vehicles compare GPH to Tacoma and that will give some idea. my 07 is lighter than the same model after 09 by couple hundred LB and still highway flat road driving reading is not much different than my 4 cyl car. Therefore I don't think there is much to save there.
Idle is where there is difference but people should not idle anyway.
So I can see for heavy traffic (California, NYC etc) that may save some fuel. Driving probably not so much.

If the ignorant wannabee rednecks whining about no deeezul really cared about low end torque, or knew what it even meant, they'd be begging for an electric taco.

I think we still have to wait to see how the Atkinson cycle will work. If in that mode the truck still makes enough power to cruise at 110 kph in 6th (~150 HP) then it will be in that mode a lot for guys with long commutes at higher cruising speeds.

Just curious but why is a 2009 heavier? The leaf springs are slightly upgraded but other than that where is the major weight difference. Are we talking 100lbs or 500lbs? I wouldn't mind seeing a source since that would be very interesting to see.

True, but I dont think I trust company who can not prevent frame from rusting to build electrical connectors to not rust on the Truck and not end up in fiery Li-Ion explosion :bananadead:

Toyota has contracts with Tesla now for battery technology. I'd expect any battery system Toyota puts in from this point on to up to Tesla standards, which are very high.

Its I believe 2007 -2015 difference is now at 200- 400lb, depending on the options.
2008 simple trucks did not had a lot of things. So all the luxury things added afterwards started pushing weight up.
Agree on seeing if Atkinson cycle makes any difference on the highway...
I doubt but I could be wrong...

there are plenty of 9 years old Fords here and none seems to need new frame after 9 years.
Side panels-yes, brake lines- yes, frame no..

Getting back to topic, I see weight savings coming for the new Tacoma so I'm not to worried on that front. Ford went with a +70% high strength steel frame this time along and I could see Toyota moving that direction as well.

I doubt we will get to see much Aluminum used but that would of been a killer feature on the Tacoma with those estimated engine specifications. The new Fords do so well in Towing and Loaded tests due to all those pounds the F150 shed with the new truck.

It will take awhile to see them on the trail...maybe a few here and there. Hell, back in the 80's when I first started buying Toyotas ('85 4Runner to be exact)...I was one of the few guys that had one in my area...man, did I get a lot of flack from my friends for buy a "Jap" vehicle back then....now they have become quite popular.

For the most part, yeah all of that dee-zal torque will be over-kill. Me personally I only "need" it for when we are loaded down with camp/moto gear towing the bikes over mountain passes. I really have to strangle its' neck to get it up and over. My buddy's 4Runner doesn't even break a sweat...so I am sure the new Taco engine will be fine.

It will be a while before Toyota goes to aluminum.
