Deep water issues

So afer my first stint with going through water, I sucked up some water on my air filter. After posting a thread about it and getting some help from tacomaman and others, I decided to make up an intake for going through deep water. This was my first time doing something like this and looks weren't a real big issue. Here's the making of it.
Started with a 4" metal duct tube I picked up from HD

Sealed the end cap to the tube with some apoxy

cut a shroud to keep splashes off the new initial air filter

After the first test.

Here you can see the extra filter I put on. Just a filter sheet from the AC aisle folded in half. It did a good job and caught some mud.

Now, here's the issue. I still took up water on my air filter.

From looking at it, seems that these two little holes in the filter housing are what's taking up the water.




Does anyone know what these holes are for? Can I plug them up so water doesn't soak up my air filter anymore? Also, I had originally planned on naming this the florida mod since flooded, muddy roads are what we have here. Unfortinatley, due to my current obligations to the Marine Corps, I had to build and test it in North Caralina.

 

maybe look into getting a snorkel....either way, plaugging the holes cant be that bad if they are extremmely little...maybe they are for drainage....

 

I couldn't get a snorkel. I just don't love they way they look enough to do something like that. Drainage is the only thing I could think that the hole are for, however obviously mine are doing the exact opposite. Maybe I could slap some duct tape on there before I head out. Then when I'm done just take it off, leaveing the hole to do whatever it is they do.

 

ya, or go to HD and get some little rubber plugs or something...but duct tape is usually the way to go

 

Yeah, your homemade filter looks way better.

 

If you're really concerned then it's best to "go all out" and install a snorkel.

 

Damn, how deep was the water you drove through?

 

It does look better, because when the hood is down, it's invisible. Obviously it's not on all the time, I would just put it on there when I was going to be going through some water.
Chris, I was trying to get my air from a better spot, I figured with it being there, and with the splash gaurd, It would keep it would keep most of it out. Which I think it did, but now it looks like the problem has been those little holes letting the water get to my air filter. There isn't some sort of super important reason they can't be coverd up prior to getting dirty is there?

 

samster, it was pretty deep, the second time around it came over the hood a little. I had my girl shoot some video, when I get a chance I'll upload it.
Chris, you may be right. As of now it seems fine, it's an alluminum tubing I got from the plumbing section. I suppose I could do more to water proof it. But it may not be worth it if pugging the hols solves the problem.

 

if your gonna be running through water that deep you need a snorkel, but I think you would also need a diesel engine?

 

Stay out of the deep stuff. What's the point? Sooner or later it'll bite you in the ass and you'll end up with a lot of expensive repairs.

Do you know what hydrolocking is and what not to do and how to revive an engine if you need to (and if its possible)??

 

Yeah, you're right. I should probably quit while I'm ahead. But it's so much fun! We've gone through alot of water growing up on my old man's hunting lease.Only once did my brother get stuck in my dads chevy and hydrolock. He was able to just pull it out with our buggy, clean the plugs, change the oil and it ran fine afterwards. But I know it can be much worse than that.

 

I'd avoid the deep water these things are not sealed up like an H1, and I'd hate to see you get a huge repair bill or even a breakdown in the middle of nowhere

Anybody run them? Not trying to give myself to cross anymore rivers in my truck, they just look like something worth picking up. It says they make custom ones, maybe they could do one up for the stock set up.

 

Snorkel... get 'er done.

 

today I noticed a kind of grinding sound comming from my belt or fan. It's not the normal squekey belt noise, it's more of a low pitched "dry" noise. Sounds like maybe a bearing or shaft isn't lubed up is just spining dry. I didn't have a crayon to rub on the belt, so I used some candle wax. That didn't get rid of it so I went to the auto store and picked up some belt conditioner, which still didn't get rid of the sound. Any ideas?
