They really are coming, but might be in the next few days.

Seems like every time I have a minute to go do the touch ups, it's too hot/sunny to mess with, so I wait. Then same thing happens next day!! Eventually this week I will get to it though : )

EDIT: Might even be nice enough to take close ups of my flaws and what I could have done differently so y'all can learn from my mistakes : )

Just returned last night. The roads in Chalk Basin area are dry (I thought about you and Eric when I crossed all the mud troughs) but it was hot and buggy out there, too hot. I spent one night at the end of the road in Chalk Basin and another night near Iron Point. The hiking is pretty rough, not much in the way of trails, but some of us don't mind that.

The heat drove me to the Steens. I camped up high on the north side, in the shade of aspens, and hiked up to the snow. The loop road was not open yet, but several people said they thought it would be, in a matter of weeks.

The last two days of my 9 day jaunt were spent doing trail crew logging in Big Sur. It was very hot and buggy there, too. I hadn't experienced the biting yellow flies before.

I have a u-joint to replace. The Mastuba part is here; I just have to search for DP's write-up on how to do this.

Sounds like a smart move to me - head to the Steens to cool off!! I love that about SE - you can drive a few miles one direction and be at some crazy high elevation, nice and cool, see everything for miles, or drive another direction and you're in the scorching hot desert. Bet you had a blast up there!

That photo is beautiful!! Is that the Owyhee River Canyon near Iron Point/Chalk Basin? What a cool view :)

I know, I know. But that paint is harder to work with if it's nasty blazing hot/sunny.

It's always nice and cool and shady in the mornings so I plan to do it then, I just never get myself organized early enough to take advantage of it lately!! Get caught up in other stuff.

Like errands and housework for example. Or TW, and researching cool places online. But mostly errands and housework, I swear. :D

Did you hike down there some? See/hear any rattlers? See any other people back on those roads?

I hiked around quite a bit, especially looking for Iron Point, but I didn't get down to the river. No rattlers and not a soul either day.

Sounds like fun!! But sounds very hot too! Were you hiking through tall sage brush type stuff or short brushy stuff or bare landscape or little bit of it all?

Did it look like it would be steep/difficult rock climbing type stuff to get down to the river? Certainly looks that way in your pic!! : )

Thanks for the info, this is extremely helpful to us in planning for going there ourselves!!! Really appreciate it MrFish!! :D

The ground is mostly pretty open and grassy with dense clusters of sage that you can wade through, but the slopes vary, as does the surface. Getting down to the river is certainly possible. I'd scour your resources (I saw the picture of your bookshelf, experienced a little envy) for beta before you go. In Chalk Basin, for example, at the end of the road, you could drop down into the wash and it looked like it might be easy walking all the way to the river. Or there could be a pour-off that I couldn't see.

The country is too broken up to make bee lines across. You need to follow contours and look for reasonable slopes to make progress going cross country.

Lots of stickers in those grasses. Consider gaiters.

    Happy to be helpful.

looks like things are going well, drove 4k miles is the last two weeks, Texarkana area (North East Texas, Southwest Arkansas) on one side, and Litchfield County, Connecticut on the other, with two totally different missions, one business and one personal, and neither one in the Taco. But, luckily home for a bit. The local spirit shop has the single barrell Buffalo Trace (barrell #124) back in stock and back in the pantry.

I took today off and did some work in the shop, air filters, windshield wipers, pulled the motor off the air compressor and got it to the shop for rebuild (five horse, single phase) and rebuilt a "knee scooter" for the wife with the broken foot. So the wife can't drive shift, so the WRX is parked, and my daughter abandoned 99 Honda Accord is pushed back into service, so repair right door to open from outside, added a modern bluetooth radio with USB and aux input, plus massive cleaning...life is good but busy.
