Just went to the dealer to commit to the GPS update for $170. They told me it will cost an additional $130 in labor to do it...I declined.

Yikes! At first I was disappointed that my truck didn't come with the nav option. Then I realized it was probably a good thing. Now, after hearing this, I KNOW it was a good thing. $300??? I use iPhone apps like I have in other vehicles. Although there are some irritating quirks, my iPhone talks with the system fairly well. No $300 update fee and best of all, any updates happen automagically.

So the only way to override the Entune is to install a switch? I started reading through this and I read the thread about cutting the wire and putting in a switch. I have just the Entune Plus so no nav.

Normally I keep an iPhone Bluetoothed to mine. A couple weeks ago I connected my android with the entune app and the head unit immediately downloaded an update. Not sure what it did, but I have had the android connected in the past and it didn't download one.

Entune 5.1 is now available for my 2012. I got an email saying after 20 August it would be available. First your entune app on the phone will need to update. You will know it's the latest update when it shows destination search instead of bing and adds slacker radio. Then you must go to this site for usb download instructions. https://securedp.toyota.com/download-app/toyotaHeadUnits
I haven't been able to see if it's much better yet but the download was quick and I updated it last night.

I use it mostof the time now as i have gotten used to the stupid pattern of entering data, but very clumsy and passenger can't do anything when moving. I also use my Garmin have a couple, but those, the Nuvi models give free lifetime updates 4 times/year and great ones are around or close to $200. I will not be paying any dealer to do what I can do and not screw it up. It's a big rip off.

I have quite a few friends that refuse to use their cell phones for navigation because of the data restrictions on their plans. I'm lucky to still have unlimited through Verizon but nav does sponge the data fairly quickly

I don't hate the Entune unit but don't love it either. For $650 you can get a very nice pioneer, alpine, or Kenwood with Apple CarPlay. Like you, this is definitely a mod on my road map.

I don't think nav data is a HUGE use of data. A) I think the data is heavily compressed and B) altho it may be continually displayed, its not a continuous data stream - your phone gets a chuck of data, then displays it for a while.

I'm sure it adds up over a long trip, or continuous use, but do you really need that much guidance day-to-day?

I'm not sure which years require the usb but if they don't they will update over the air with your phone connected.

Thanks for the link, I had forgotten I was waiting for this. Update went smooth without a hitch.

I do like the new Destination feature, reduces the need to search via maps, which I never ever liked anyway. I usually always use Yelp when on the open road.
I still wish for the following, but will never see:
    • Ability for passenger option so they can route while moving
    • User map updates
    • Ability to change GPS format
    • Text
    • Email
    • Pictures
    • Easier interface for contacts and map destinations
    • Truck system data
I use my Garmin Nuvi for current maps and also have my 64st Garmin that I can both sore and route while moving.

I am like the rest of you in that we are all pretty capable to do our own map updates, and the cost should be less than $90.

You have to go into display setup with your lights on to set it to day mode when the lights are on. Manual will direct you better.
