I just got this truck. A 2015 ToyotaTacoma TRD Off Road 4x4, and the mpg is 14.83. I must say I am surprised it is so low. Can anyone help me understand why?

Could be a lot of things. A lot of city driving or idling, getting on the accelerator, hilly terrain, cheap gas. Try to stay off the accelerator [getting on it], buy a top tier fuel and do some hwy driving if possible. Also, you could check your tire pressure. I'm averaging about 18 mpgs with All Terrain tires and a slight lift.

How many miles on your truck? When I first got mine I was getting 13-15 mpgs around town now I am around 17-17 mpgs but also watching the skinny pedal should help

Mileage will increase as you get some miles on the truck.

its a 4x4 so its gonna natually get a lil less mpg.

And being so new shes a tight girl.... give her some miles to loosen up. One of my worst tanks was brand new with like 100 miles on her. I typically average ~17.5 in 60% city. and 20ish on the hwy, thats with a 2in lift and bigger AT tires.

Once it is broken in you should get about 18 or so on the freeway.

If you are mostly doing city/suburban driving (Traffic Lights, Stop and Go)you are getting the average right now.

You can check out fuelly to get an idea of what other folks are getting...

Watch the skinny pedal, don't be stomping it down. City driving is bad on these trucks. Are you driving a 6 speed or auto?

I just filled up this morning. 373.2 miles 17.1 gallons of gas. 21.82mpg. 240 miles of high way at 70 MPH. 133 miles of country roads at 55 MPH.

^^ Sounds about the same as my experience. Although I've never gotten 22mpg, but highways around here are 70MPH.

This was very consistent with what I had seen before switching to 285s (now It's about 2mpgs lower in general). Also I tend to get slightly better mpgs when I get the pure gas without ethanol...I know that might be a hot issue but my truck seems to like it. My truck has 95k miles though....

Needs a little breaking in. I do about 17 combined and 20.5 hwy with 32 inch mud terrains and a 2.5 lift. (With a supercharger using premium)

Unfortunately, this is the truth. These trucks were designed when gas was under a dollar per gallon and never updated as the model run went on. Its a bummer that nobody let you know. These trucks are pretty good, but the gas mileage is literally the worst thing about the truck. Even the 4 cylinders get terrible mileage.

I get between 14-15 in the city no matter how I drive, and I've never seen 20 mpgs even on an all highway trip. I'm in a bone-stock TRD Sport 4x4 v6.

For better mileage try one tank of taking off slowly from stops, watching the tach and try not to exceed 2000 rpm. Try to anticipate traffic lights and start slowing earlier for red lights. The Wright defensive driving school classes I attended refers to traffic lights as "stale or fresh" depending on how long they have been green or red. Without going into a long winded discussion just anticipate changes and use engine braking i.e. Coasting when approaching red lights.

When highway driving try to stay around 65-67 mph and your mileage will improve. These changes are hard when you first try them but pay off with improved mileage which was your question.

keep the needle below 2k rpms. Take off gradually from complete stops, and coast up to redlights, trying to time it so you dont even have to stop. Don't drive like a bonehead 18 year old who just got his license. I look at it this way. These trucks may be a bit thirsty for gas, but that will be made up for with long term reliability/low maintenance costs. ***edit sorry for the redundancy

I can't imagine why you cant get 20mpg. Try taking an hour drive on a road that lets you average 55 mph. This speed seems to be a sweet spot. Not a lot of stop and go. I drove from pittsfield, ma to albany ny on Rt.20 doing just that. It has lots of hills/terrain variation as well. I got about 21.5-22mpg. Is your air filter clean?

I get 250 miles to a tank if i'm lucky.. and that's driving like a grandpa.. on the highway.
City is a max of 220.
    Then again that's with a 6.5" lift with 35s :p
