So I stumbled upon this stuff here and was reading up on it, but haven't really found a whole lot of information relating to offroad armor. I'm curious if anyone has ever tried it?

I saw a couple of autobody YouTube clips, but was wondering if anybody has any experience using this or not.

Yeah, that's one of the things I'm wondering the Zinc chromate is for aluminum and it says to use zinc phosphate for steel which prompted my question.

Yeah anytime i buy aluminum wheels i spray this on them prior to paint so the paint sticks to them like glue. Works great

I can't really tell what that product is, but zinc phosphate is what the OEMs use to make paint adhere better to steel. Basically it turns the small amount of iron oxide (rust) on the surface into iron phosphate, which a little bit more of an "adherent oxide" that's less likely to flake off than iron oxide. Stuff that's been phosphated is almost always painted or powder coated afterwords though, because you can scratch off the phosphate coating relatively easily still.

Chromate is something similar for aluminum, it turns the surface oxide into a surface chromate that's more corrosion resistant. It doesn't really work that well for steel.

Thank you, I appreciate your response, I'm wondering if I should take the extra step and spray it with this product or not. It advertises itself as a marine grade type of primer just not sure if it's actually going to help make my paint job last a little longer than just using regular etching primer.

I'm not sure I'd bother with any fancy paint prep. Since its on armor, its going to get scratched up anyways, you might as well just rattlecan it once a year to cover up the scratches.

Zinc Phosphate was a common finish for US military firearms during WWII, there are still quite a few left with that original finish so I imagine it's pretty good stuff.
