good family camping areas?

I'm planning a family vacation later this summer and am looking for suggestions on camping locations in Northern California. We'll be coming in on HWY 101 from Oregon, ideally I'm hoping for suggestions along the 101 between Oregon and Eureka, CA, including the Redwood National and State Parks area, Six Rivers NF and Shasta-Trinity NF.

On the way back to the north we'll be heading towards Klamath Falls so suggestions along HWY96 in the Klamath NF, or along HWY3 or I5 would be great.

I am hoping to have a new suspension before this trip, however for now I'm mostly stock, so while I'd really like some dispersed options in the NF I need to plan for moderate off-road.

EDIT - forgot, my wife is really interested in seeing Redwoods, if that helps in narrowing options.

check out the app Roadtrippers. Theres a crazy amount of things to do listed on there and you can even plan yourself an itinerary with the app with stops of interest

Over toward Klamath Falls, on hwy140(if you decide to go that way) theres some nice camping areas near Lake of the Woods up there, or you can cut north and camp near or at Crater Lake too.

 

Thanks, hitting the Klamath/Crater Lake area is part of the master plan once I turn back North, we are hoping there will be enough water left in Oregon to do a bit of river rafting in the area.

I don't know much up that way, sorry! I will say that you probably can't go wrong in any of those general areas. With a family you might consider a developed camp ground unless they are all used to dispersed camping. Also, most of the NF fire roads are tame from my noobish experience. I wouldn't stop you from using that to justify a little , erm, suspension refresh, but not necessary.

Oh, and I've been up to trinity area a bit, in laws have a vacation cabin. It is nice, but not much different than most West coast ranges. I would check out redwoods for sure! I visited a nice campground near shasta too but doubt I can remember where (wasn't driving and moderately intoxicated)!

 

It's been years since I was up that way I'll have to think about it, but off the top of my head, fern canyon near gold bluffs beach, and coos bay.

 

Also most nf roads aren't technical and can be done with a pretty runner.

About half of this trip is planned to be in state park grounds - at least once I get out of Washington where the state parks may close due to our crappy government - but half being dispersed. I've already prepped them for the differences, and picked up a canister toilet and a privacy tent.

 

You'll love Crater Lake if you haven't been already.

 

Bring bug spray if you're going to crater lake the mosquitoes can get really bad, worst I've ever dealt with.
