Thoughts on 37s

Yep. Been running them. Any other brain busters Mr. Brady? Or can me and the other 100 motherfers in here on less then 37s continue to fill the pages on "thoughts"

Ok I'll play on topic. Cap did you ever regear or are you still running 4.56's

 

Interested in this as well. I just went to 4.56's because I got a good deal on 'em.. wondering if they would be "acceptable" on 37s

 

I like my 4 56 with my stl "36.5" on steel beadlocks. She doesn't like to do 80-85 but it doesn't mind 70 to 75

 

Yup still running the 4.56s with no plans to change. Measuring with the tires at 32psi and on the ground with the weight on the truck they measure just a hair over 36".

I do a lot of highway driving to go wheel. At least 3hrs each way so I'm not going to reheat to 4.88s. Keep in mind I've got the 6speed.

I still plan to add a crawl box which will give me all the off road gearing I need.

This weekend will be my first wheeling trip with it so we'll see what happens. I have a spare CV and an empty credit card just in case.

 

Get a inner and outer tie rod as well! I'm not sure if it's how well the tsls hooked up or the stress from bigger tires but I was on the verge of breaking one on my last trip.

 

Crawlbox probably won't happen till next summer. This is still my DD and only vehicle. She's up to 217k miles. A lot of maintenance stuff needs to be done soon. My LCA bushings are bad so I'll throw new arms in. I would like to go ahead and replace all belts, hoses, rack, PS pump, alternator ect in one big swoop to freshen things up. That'll eat up my budget for the crawler for a while.

Speaking of which, anyone know what I should expect to spend to but the crawl box in? I'm figuring 4k for the box, fj case and DS mods but that's a shot in the dark. I need to replace the clutch while I'm in there.

 

Crawl box around 2k fj t case around 3 if you look around. And what ever you spend on the sticks. Drive shaft if you shop around can do both for about $400

 

Will do. Mine are about a year old. Not worried about wear on them but I know it's an easy part to bend/break. I really don't wanna beef them up either for fear of breaking a rack

 

You will bend the rack before you break it

 

So 3-4k. Sounds like what I was expecting

 

That's probably not much better, but hopefully it'll get me home if bent and not broken.

Marlin isn't making the adapter for 2nd gens anymore but inchworm is pretty similar. Since you have the 6 speed you'll need the coupler to go from the 22 spline transmission output to 23 which costs a little extra. Crawlbox is 2k, FJ case is 500 bucks, twin stick it yourself. The twin sticks are $100. Another $200 in driveshaft mods, and maybe $50 in electrical work to extend the wiring and make a new ADD switch. so around $3k give or take. Install takes a solid 2-3 days so be prepared to spend many hours under the truck.

 

I got my t case for 325, and if your messing with your drive shafts might as well go ahead and upgrade to .093 wall but everything else is spot on.

 

That's true, you might be able to score it for cheaper, I was just rough estimating. I've seen them go on ebay for all the way upwards of $1000 which is ridiculous. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for one that's for sure.

What I ended up doing for driveshafts is have the shop take 8.5" out of the "short section" ahead of the carrier bearing on my stock driveshaft, this is the shaft I use for a spare. Normally I run a .120 wall one piece driveshaft with a double cardan joint, I get those shafts from the junkyard for $50 and have the shop retube them. Think I've got 3 or 4 of them now haha. They come in the rear of the 96-02 4runners or the front of the 86-89 IFS 4runners and pickups.

 

My plan is to be running a one piece drive shaft by the end of the year
