Life after the supercharger... What else can I do?

I purchased my Tacoma with every intention of adding the supercharger the day it was paid off. The power of the 4.0 is merely adequate and leaves much to be desired. I'm well aware this is not a sports car, but 236 HP does not work for me.

After hearing the supercharger was going to be discontinued, I was pretty bummed and a little pissed off. By the the time my truck is paid off in 2.5 years, I will be out of luck. Had I known I was not going to be able to supercharge later, I probably would not have purchased a Tacoma. Silly deal breaker? Maybe. But they've been supercharging these trucks since the late 90's - I was not expecting it to end so abruptly.

I began to explore other options to add power to the 4.0. I live in California where the enviro nuts have pretty much ruined everything when it comes to an engine burning fossil fuels, so anything done would have to pass smog. My searches have turned up an intake, exhaust, and headers. I've read all of these items may or may not pass smog. Also read that lower gears could help, but at the expense of mileage. Mileage is not a huge consideration, as this truck will become my weekend driver by the time I'm ready to upgrade.

Are there any other things, CARB legal, I can do to this engine for more power and faster acceleration?

What kind of gains do you think I'd get with a CAI, exhaust, headers, and gears?

Would they be worth the money?

How much of a pain would it be to go stock to pass smog?

    Thanks for your help!

Well, as of right now, not much.. Theres only 1 carb legal intake as of right now made by AEM, and the only carb legal cat back exhaust as far as I know is the TRD ... Im stuck in the same boat as you as far as mods go. Headers and a y pipe will undoubtedly cause a check engine light because you'll be deleting emission controles, if you want to run those and hopefully pass you'll need a stand alone ecu, and at that point you may as well just get an aftermarket supercharger or turbo. But even if you do all of that there's still no guarantee that you'll pass smog. Plus all of that big stuff is illegal in California lol

And reverting back to stock for smog is a PITA and in my opinion not worth it

Depends on how much power do you realistically want to make. You might be able to squeeze another 50hp staying NA and not doing anything major internally. Maybe cams and some head work? I think URD has a 50hp NA kit for $3K.

What the hell? Toyota is actually going to discontinue the TRD blower? Seriously?

    Sonovabish....

This is not good. I want a blower too. I just cannot justify 4K+ for a car part right now. Seeing as I'm trying to get a house. That's not to say I can't not buy it at this very moment. Lol.

At that point he's better off just trying to locate a used TRD supercharger because doing cams and all that work is going to require a stand alone ECU anyway major engine work and major tune work and it is still not guaranteed to pass smog

Fuck it. Just waste your money on LT and lightweight reduction mods. It's all about that power to weight ratio anyways.

depends on how much cash you want to invest... CARB approved GM V8 swap the drivetrain or at least the engine.

    http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/crate-engines/e-rod-ls3.html

I just wish I can find a shop that I can trust to do the work. I loved for more room, but that's why I went with regular cab... it's lightest of them all...just wish there was a supercharger to buy that was CARB for 2.7L. It would be a decent compromise since it's just a truck... I wouldn't mind a gen1 taco at 2800lbs for regular cab 236HP would be plenty. Sadly Access and Double cabs don't fit my parking situation and the long wheel base really takes the fun away from driving it...but since there a lot of folks who needs the room... supercharger or swap EROD and your legal in CA.

I bought a manual trans in case this happened (I had similar plans to get a TRD blower after I pay my truck off in 3-4 years or so) but now I'll probably just deal with it though I have a sneaking suspicion the lack of power will cause me to sell the truck eventually and get something with a little more room and engine power. I'd consider a used blower w/a new rotor pack but the price on them will be stupid due to the discontinuation.

I also bought manuel Tacoma for the same reason other than the fact that I just like to drive stick.. and it's been a pain to try and locate some California legal mods because here in New Jersey in New York for that matter everybody is under tier 2 California missions unfortunately so parts locating has been slim.. I recently just picked up the only carb legal intake for our trucks (for 2012 plus anyway) and I'm currently running the TRD catback .. and I also have the TRD short shifter as well ... everything meshes together pretty good but there are some bigger nicer cat back exhaust systems out there and definitely some better cold air intakes

I definitely forsee the price of these blowers even used, going up due to high demand for them. Which is bullshit in itself because these are already overpriced for what they are in the first place. If they were $3000 or so I would had picked one up a long time ago but I can't justify spending over that for a power adder.

Same here man... but just the fact that they bolt on directly and there is a factory tune that makes it extremely reliable it sorta justifies the price but not really lol

Yeah. I mean the bolt on factor is great, but I don't know. Like I said the price is just up there.

By Toyota discontinuing the supercharger it just doesn't give a Tacoma owner the oportunity to purchase the factory performance upgrade that they want now or in the future. That's all i meant.

I don't know why in the hell they would want to do that but that is total short sightedness on their end.
