If anyone needs a recommendation for a motorcycle shop to avoid at all costs, let me know. Just found a really shitty one in Bellingham!

MCH Cycles, he seemed to do decent enough work but the owner has absolutely no integrity as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, he was supposed to give it a tune up. I'll start out by saying the reason i even found him was a friend from work is one of his friends and referred me, he even called to tell him I'd be bringing the bike in to him. I brought it to him, the gas leaked through the carbs and into the oil, i told him about all of it and he gave me a price to fix it. He said he was busy so it'd be a couple weeks which was fine since i was just looking to sell it anyways. Well, that was 9.5 weeks ago, thats right, 9.5 weeks for a job that a capable mechanic can bang out in a day. On top of that, i called once a week to check in, make sure we were still tracking to the original budget. He said some of the parts were more expensive but we were still good on the budget end. I also told him when i dropped it off that if he went over the budget, call me because i didn't want to have that much into it. My bill was double the budget and he was telling me as recent as a few days ago that we were still on track. His explanation was, the budget was just parts cost (bullshit). He lowered it a little bit but he had the bike, the keys and i have no recourse other than to make sure no one else gets screwed by him. I told my buddy at work what happened and he said he wouldn't refer any more work to him either.

Ugh, that would absolutely drive me nuts. I understand if you run into issues and the budget goes up, but at least have the decency to call first. If nothing else, I'd much prefer a higher quote and come in lower than a lower quote and come in higher. When I had the timing belt done on the Subaru, I got the initial quote and thought everything was great. The bill came back about $100 higher, which part was attributed to a few additional parts, but the main part was they "didn't include tax" in the estimate. So obnoxious.

The schedule thing would irk me more than the budget though. There is nothing worse than a situation in which you give someone a bit of leeway on schedule and they take a mile. When I had the quarter panels replaced on my Accord, I was told it would take approximately 3 weeks to complete by a local, highly recommended body shop. I dropped the car off and it sat for two weeks before they even pulled it in. I felt like I was there once a week trying to get the work expedited. Two and a half months later I got my car back. The work was top notch, but it was agony.

I hear you Mike, I'm still pissed today about it!

The schedule thing did irk me a little but not really until I got the bill. I figured he had to have over $500 into the bike (which was the original estimate) but he kept telling me we were good. I figured he was burying some of his cost to try to make it right for taking so damn long. I didn't realize he was screwing me on both the schedule and the price or I would have take the bike back from him a long time ago. So now, I'll just tell anyone I know who has a bike or will listen not to patronize him. He does that to enough people, he won't be in business much longer.

Bad way to do business, that. Very unprofessional and it gets you a rep as a scam artist pretty quick.
When I worked as a service writer I always called to get approval if the price went up at all. I mean, if a part was an extra $10 or we needed something unexpected I'd call. And I didn't even own my own business; I worked for a company!
Can't understand why people don't connect transparency in billing with having a good reputation.

Mike that is what we in sales call the 3 and 30 rule. If someone likes something he might tell 3 people about his good experience but if someone feels they were wronged in any way they will tell everyone they know (that's the 30 part). Same holds true for service as sales and service are tied in together a lot of times. It can kill a company if they screw over to many people. Sorry to hear about it bud

Exactly! I would have thought a small business would know better. He'll be alright, there aren't a lot of shops around doing motorcycle work so he'll stay busy I'm sure. I can promise none of his customers will be sent from my direction though!
