Crank is already forged. Rods and heads are what need upgrading. I've only heard of rod knock and blown head gaskets due to high boost in these engines, so I'm sure they could handle almost 20 PSI with forged rods & cams and cometic head gaskets.

    Yea crank is not forged.

And a fun as going boooooosssssttt sounds. This is the wrong truck and motor for that.

Doing the head work alone will be 4-6k. LCE is probably the only place that could do it.

It's not worth it really. Plus you'll constantly be blowing stuff up.

The record is 1700 horsepower in the 5vzfe. I am far from an expert and really dont care to be one by any means. Having fun and enjoying the truck as well as the process is important to me. My contentment lies in the 400ft lb range with reliability. Pretty sure ill be there soon. More just dreaming of big boost. Quite sure a 2jz is better for building, yet also expensive. Guy I know swapped one in his mr2. And yes, booooooost to me is way, way better than 5000 lights I'll never use. What keeps the boat afloat is up to the captain though now isnt it?

Solo motorsports LT and spring under/bedcage kit and king 2.5 fronts and triple bypass rears are heading my direction. Big glass kit front/rear should be here this week. After all that and 35" a/t tires I may be fairly done unless I choose to run another axle (Ford 9" or tundra). Fairly done...........

Nice intake system and exhaust on those middle east trucks. I might set up my new turbo Volkswagen beetle like that.

Badass unlimited class trucks here imo.

And oh yeah, there's a reason I own a tacoma and not a Volkswagen beetle. Haha.

You'll hit 400 easy with current setup and I would go over it. The amount of money required to get more is insane since aftermarket support for internals is very small and usually custom. Plus 400 is the sweet spot for crazy and fun anyways.

2jz swap is expensive. About 4-5x as much as you've spent so far. But it is pretty simple motor swap wise. Wouldn't be worth it unless you did a stroker though. The low end torque isn't as good as the 5vz

The 3VZ-FE crank is a forged drop in and pretty cheap. Its been speculation that the 3VZ-FE cams are swap-able but I've yet to see it. Not saying it can't happen, just haven't seen it. I have read that it wouldn't work because the 3VZ-FE used a distributor... :notsure:

Id be wary about the valves swapping cams.

Yeah, I wouldnt volunteer to be the guinea pig but the crank tends to be the weak point on the trucks. Upgrading that should give you a bit more power potential. While you are in there, would get some ARP studs.

Still having issues with my fic6. I may just end up getting a harness to solve a lot of headache. Pin diagrams I have and the colors on the ecu pins are not correct. I really could use some help on this.

I took it slowly. I wish you had an 01 ECU, I have all the pins. Did you try customtacos.com? I bet you someone on there has your year ECU that can help you out.

I think you recommended the boomslang, that thing is $350 for a dang harness. Unfortunately it may be worth it.

Yes, for plug n play (ie they do the wiring). The TRD harness is only $190 IIRC but you will have to do the wiring on the harness.

As long as it is setup for whatever pins need hooked up I can solder wires all day. Lol.

Not really setup. Its just a patch harness that connects between your ECU and the car harnesses. That way you can A: wire up the patch harness out of the car B: not have to cut up your stock harness, and C: be able to easily return your ECU to stock if you desire. You will still have to figure out what pins need to be intercepted / spliced.

Boomslang will do it for you but they have screwed things up in the past.

I see what you are saying. Like the points you made and will definitely get a harness.

    http://www.well.com/~mosk/images/Tacoma_ECU_pinout_drafts/1998_4Runner_5VZ-FE_ECU_swap_wiring.pdf

Print this out and start taking notes on it while comparing it to the Toyota ECU schematic in the FSM. I googled the codes if I didn't know what they meant or asked on customtacos.com and got a lot of good gouge.

I wrote everything down: AEM Wire "MAG+ IN" get connected to Sensor side of Pin "xx" or something like that. When I had it all and reviewed it multiple times, I had some help getting it all soldered. I could do it but I knew a guy that could do it in 1/10th the time I could.

I've tried to open that file for the 4Runner but it comes up blacked out. All the info is black.

And the fsm download is a zip file. Doesn't open on my phone.
