    Hey guys,

I remember someone talking about an upgrade that is available for the 2.7L engines. Mine is a 2012. Can you all go into a little bit of detail on this?

    Thanks

What kind of upgrade? Power? Mileage? Displacment? Induction?

    URD or bust,

Don't get me wrong, I love the 2.7L, if you really want more noise get an exhaust and or header, they have slight gains in certain rpms.
But, this little engine loves to work! Not rev like a Honda but work. I loved my little 2.7 this winter and tooling around in 2nd gear in the snow
just as easy as can be.

If I had the funds I'e be all over the URD... Dreams right, we gotta have them!

The 4 is worth keeping healthy as solid transportation. If you are doing creepy crawly stuff, gear swap will get you into the torque range faster for more drivability, at some expense on MPG. And not really uber cheap to execute.

If you're wanting racer of some type, figure the budget of a SC and engine management support. You'll find your $/hp ratio is pretty hefty.

Then calculate what it would cost to trade the truck for a v6 version, or to go big with an LSx swap. And calculate those $/hp numbers. Not to mention the cool factor on the LSx swap. ;-)

LSx is a GM V8. The LS is the 'family', the x gets replaced with a number like 1-7 for various generations, obviously with some differences. But IIRC the external configuration (size, shape, mount locations etc) are all the same.

Dropping in a fully warrantied crate motor, complete with OE engine management would make a sweet, and powerful, package.

Caution should be used not to overpower the Tacoma driveline.

It would be nice to be able to set up a custom gear set on them. Maybe a 6-speed with decent ratios. Problem with just a straight gear swap, is that on these transmissions, the low side is too high, and the high side is too low. I'd like to be able to start off at 4.5-5:1 and end off about 0.65-0.7:1.

    That makes sense,

Sorry for not knowing, I haven't been around American Iron talk for a few years now, lol...

I do have a cousin with an RX7 and an LSx swap...

Nah, those wenkels were a nightmare when they started to wear internals. Great when they were new but hell when they were old. An LS would be a somewhat reliable engine, keeps the great rx-7 styling, and lots of power.

Apex seals are easy, plus the sound and the smoooothness. I replace them twice, then side ported my fc. 10k chainsaw sounding 1.3l monster. Better than any pushrod v8......

    In my very biased opinion.....

He honestly built that car just to pick fights and run around on the roadways, used to run Ford Mustang GT 17 inch wheels some ugly spoiler and then the built LS whatever V-8 it is, it's a very very strong Corvette engine, I know that!

I'm pretty sure the last time I spoke to him he was building a triple rotary for another RX7 he has.

I am pretty sure that motor in the Mazda is an LT1 which is the precursor to the LS motors. Those aren't bad motors but nothing compared to an actual LS motor. Those were the last 5.7's Chevy built. I have thought about dropping a Chevy SB in my 2.7 but I want to keep my W59 and haven't found any good information for an adapter.

    Might be,
I've been away from Old American V8s for a while now.

I just know it runs really well!

Rotarys are great, but they're not "better than any pushrod v8". I have a 93 RX7 and have considered a LS conversion.
    What you get:
    430HP (LS3)
    massive torque
    ultra reliable
    near 30mpg
easy to add hp and easy to fix.
    What you lose:
    Rotary cache
    rotary smoothness
tendency to grenade (rotary owners know what this is)
    crappy gas mileage
ever more expensive to replace parts
