I have had good luck cooking on this. The oven is a great place to keep food warm and being able to bake buns and cookies greatly extends your menu.

I have the Camp Chef version of that and it's great. GF & I love it. A bit bulky to haul around, but worth it.

If I am solo I do the same for dinners and love it.

Camp ovens are pretty neat. I'd like to try one on a base camping trip one day.

So I might have missed this somewhere along the line but those silicone handle grips I really do need. Where did you find those?

Edit: Nevermind. Amazon Prime FTW! :)

I hear you. I will also cook simple stuff on tinfoil and usually have a compact pot and pan set with me so I could make something a little fancy. But usually when I'm out I'm hiking, fishing, doing something and I don't like to waste much time cooking

Ironically I cook more while camping then I do at home. I think it has something to do with not being in a hurry while camping. Either that or I am a closet glamper.

Haha I could definitely see that. A lot of people take it easy and slow camping. I don't get to go out that much, especially since we had a kid last year. Do when I do I try to pack as much stuff in as I can:rofl:

I've been trying to convince my wife we need one so we can have hand made pizza and fresh apple pie while camping. For some reason she doesn't think that baking in the woods sounds like much fun.

If you go with the heat exchange unit then you need to run the engine every time you want hot water, correct?
An alternative to consider.....I think this is way more practical, efficient and simple; http://www.amazon.com/Camp-Chef-HWD5-Triton-Heater/dp/B001J4AU2E

This requires input at 25psi. Would you have to combine this with a pump?

Yes you do. Most setups that use the propane water heaters use a 12v RV style pump.

I tried one of the propane heaters but, I ended up returning it due to issues with wind blowing out the pilot light.

Yup to the 12v pump. And yeah the wind and pilot light is one of the chief complaints in the reviews. So far in a couple of backyard sessions it hasn't been a problem even without trying to shield it. Real world testing is still pending.

I would like to find a cabinet (like a metal first aid cabinet) to mount it in for both travel ease and a bit of wind protection. If nothing else the dog gets a warm bath now so its not a complete waste of $100 from his point of view. :)

I've got my pump under where the spare tire is. I got a 7 gallon jug from bass pro for cheap. Easiest way to fill from a stream is to cover the fill port with a rag and pour water through. Mine doesn't self prime so I would need one of those in line squeeze primer pump things like on a boat gas tank.

@EricU here's the thread where we all put the details together to get this done. I have a 40 plate exchanger and it works perfectly. Maybe too well at times. I've heard complaints about the 10 and 20 plate ones not keeping up heat with the flow of a 12v pump

Picked up some more scepter cans today. I'm gearing up for a two week road trip and music festival.

    image.jpg

Got myself a red MFC, fuel nozzle and two black MWC. I've had the two blue ones for a few months now and love them. I also picked up another water spout and modified it to accept a standard garden hose.

    image.jpg

The two black ones will be used for camp showers/warm water and the two blues will be used for drinking water.

I plan on building a stand to hold the two black water cans on my yakima rails above my canopy to let them bake in the sun and feed a gravity fed shower. I'm going to bend EMT pipe to hold a big "U" shower curtain rod that will also be secured to my yakima rails. I'm thinking that I'll attach some 1" EMT pipe to the rails and have the "U" bent out of 3/4" EMT pipe that will be removable and slide it into the 1" pipe fastened to the rack. From there I can just zip tie a tarp to the shower rod. I'll run a small garden hose off the cans with a sprayer for showering
