Tire Pressure Indicator Light

Hello -

I recently purchased a 2008 Tacoma Pre-Runner and noticed that my tire pressure indicator light has gone on. I have checked the pressure in all tires, (except the spare because it is very hard to get to) and the light is still on. I even had a neighbor of mine whom is a mechanic and has seen this before, however he was unable to help.

The truck only has 15,000 miles on it so I doubt it is something major. It is more annoying then anything else.

Does anyone have any suggestions on is to what the heck could be causing this? It is very frustrating.....VERY!

 

I believe there is a sensor in the spare too. You're gonna need to check it as well. And add air as needed. My indicator light has kicked on several times, and I've just added air to all five tires--This has fixed it each time.

I will try that, I'm assuming that because the air valve on the spare tire is "bed side up" I will have to remove the entire tire, right?

 

I'm assuming that it gradually lowers from loosening it, right?

 

Mine came on this weekend also. Drop the spare down and flip it over so the valve is pointing down, then put it back up. I've had to fill my spare twice in the past two months.

 

If the spare is meant to be located with the valve "bed side up", has anyone put a flexible valve stem extension on to where you don't have to lower the spare every time you want to check it's pressure?

 

I have too too much fun keeping that damn light off on the wife's RAV4. Thank God they didn't put this crap on my base model prerunner, LOL.

 

Strange--Mine's valve side down. I'm sure you can just take it out and flip it over.

 

I had mine go off the other day also. Checked all my pressures and they were fine. Found a button under the steering wheel that said tpms so I pushed it. The light went off. So maybe the light comes on every 15k to remind you to rotate your tires. Kinda like the maintenece light coming on for oil changes.

 

it does not come on automatically, i just had that problem at 18.5k miles... i did find out however that you do have to push that button in order to get the light to go off once the tires are inflated and it can take a minute or two for the light to go off after pushing the button (i had a fun time at the dealership to figure that one out)

 

If the light blinks for one minute straight, and then goes solid, one of your TPMS sensors is broken. If it just turns on then one of your tires' pressure is off.

There is a TPMS reset button underneath the steering wheel. This is used to reset the system/initialize it. Dont hit this button unless you are planning to run a new tire pressure. What this button does is "teaches" the TPMS system that a new pressure is the standard. I think Toyota sets the standard like at 34psi. The TPMS light will come on when your pressure is off by 4psi (+,-). If your pressure is at 20psi, the light will come on. If, at this pressure, while the light is on, you reset the system, you are telling it that 20psi is the new standard, and thus the light will come on only when you go past 24psi or below 16psi.

 

Damn, so one of my sensors is busted then. Fuck stick.

 

Yea you shouldnt have to push the button for it to turn off. When I hit the trails I air down and the light goes on but once I'm done, I air up again and the light turns off on its own, no buttons pushed.

 

DId you recently get new tires?

 

about the button under the steering wheel, I have noticed one there. when I purchased it, this past weekend, the dealer that I purchased it from had the pressure a good 4-7 psi more then what the owners manual said the psi should be. I have since aired down to the recommended psi setting.

Should I now hit the button under the steering column to set it?
