How can I improvise a crankshaft pulley holder?

    Getting the pulley off is the easy part..just pull the efi fuse, put a socket on a breaker bar and put the breaker bar on the frame. Bump the starter and the bolt will come right out.

    Part of the process of removing the heads, is removing the timing cover. Which means removing the crank pulley.

    I also have one with a chain on the end, also for largish pipes.

    But I have used the belt trick a few times over the years...

    Quickest/easiest way to get crank pulley bolt loose. Used this approach a number of times.

    Thanks! I've done a few timing belts and chains on stuff over the years, but didn't know the particulars in this case.

    I would have expected an idler or tensioner that would allow release of chain tension to get enough slack to remove the chain........

    If the intake cam gear were able to be removed, with the timing cover on, that would be a possibility. However, it would then be a shot in the dark to know if you timing was properly set upon reinstallation. As the chain would fall off of the crank sprocket, as well as the idler sprocket at the "V" of the block.

    The bolt for the intake cam gear is to long and cannot come out though, so it alleviates all of that question.

    Is the crankshaft pulley bolt regular or reverse thread? I'm trying to ratchet both ways in the 6th speed with the parking brake engaged but it's not going anywhere, using a long ratchet too. The 6th speed blocking mechanism does seem to work though.

    Regular thread. It is torqued down to ~185 ft-lbs, but it has been heat cycled many times, so it will be even harder. Unless yours is supercharged, then it is around ~220. I don't know the specific s/c torque.

    New Navigation DVD/CD/TV/AV/Bluetooth Stereo and seat mod spacers, 1" hubcentric spacers, seat heaters....
    long ass 1/2" breaker bar and socket, hit start quick and off, like, click, then off....make sure the end of the bar is secure against the ground or a support of some kind, instant off...best way, fast and ez...ratchets, unless an actual torque wrench, probably won't take to 200lbs of torture, like you found out...

    I did it with the help of a 3' black pipe extension over the breaker bar. Hurray to the lever !!

    It is bolted to the cover. It must be removed as well. All the bolts are on the side under where the compressor was.

    There are also 4 bolts on the bottom, which go through the oil pan, into the cover.

    I do not know where this latest post is, if it isn't in this thread.
