That's an engineer for you, lol,all I know is these 6112s perform way better than the 5100s

For an engineer it's funny that he hasn't considered heat dissipation. The quick fluid movements from washboards will cause heat, which will be absorbed and then dissipated far more effectively by the much larger volume of the 6112 over the 5100. Heat causes shocks to behave incorrectly and that's the reason everyone doesn't just go with a tiny stock shock body on top of durability and valving differences.

    Just a thought.

Perhaps you should try reading my posts a little more closely; my wording is usually very specific. Do not ASSume things.

    First, I have the 6112's.

Second, perhaps you can show me where I said something (anything) about heat dissipation. I understand what a larger heat reservoir is for as well as the effect of a larger surface area for dissipation.

    @Lostsheep

I haven't been following this whole thing, but started reading on page 4. I don't understand why you continue to be (pardon my french) a bit of a smug asshole about things? Not sure what your axe is to grind, TacoDeLaPlaya has replied to you as best as he can and spoke honestly that he can't speak to things from the standpoint that you can, and suggested you contact Bilstein.

Not only were you kind of a dick to him, but now you're calling another member an ass?

Please consider the attitude of your posts. You're painting yourself to be a douche bag.

Sterdog is saying you're comparing 5100 and 6112 based on valving but are not taking into consideration the cooling (and therefore performance) values of the two products.

    Is that right?

This :D. With better heat dissipation the shock will function as designed on washboard and rougher terrain which will lead to better perceived performance. That was the original comment, that the shocks seemed to rebound better on washboard, and I just provided a solid hypothesis based on good science.

Take it easy. No need to be an ASShole to everyone else.

Correct. The comment was about a shock in a repetitive motion which generates a significant amount of heat. The 6112 should function better in these conditions than the 5100 due to the larger reservoir as well as the larger surface area for heat dissipation.

I can't stand sales people spreading misinformation.

Guilty as charged WRT being rude, over and out.

I agree, let's take it easy. No need to get abrasive, we are all just discussing the shocks because we all love our trucks. I'm an engineering student by the way :D

I think the information being asked for is proprietary so it isn't really available. in addition i readily admit i dont often use those calculations myself or when recommending things. Not too mention the measurement in question is hard to compare since its not available, that i know of, for any shock out there.

im trying to relate to people that the shock isnt like a 5100 for many reasons, and through testing the differences are apparent.

5100 is for street performance or to lift or level a light duty offroad truck. If you want to level or lift a truck that you need to perform well over a long trail ride or are looking at a long sand filled section of desert where your gonna need to stay on the gas for a few minutes to hours then the 6112 is what your after.

If your intended use falls in between that, im in the better safe than sorry camp and would chose 6112 unless it was completely cost prohibitive.

Hey Guys, Great Info I am Runner 5100's(Toytech 3in setup) with Icon UCA's, Wheelers Super-Bumps, Icon Leaf pack, Wheelers Super-Bumps, and 5100's. I have to say I am not very Happy with the 5100's .... I mostly drive On-road and hit service/fire roads 15 maybe 20% of the time I am heavily considering the 6112 but so unhappy wuth the 5100's I am hesitant. I would love Icon's but price is a big deal here with a new Family and all but I do need as close to 3in I can get I am Running 285/75/16's what do you guys think?

If the 5100 are worn out and the 2.5 icons cost to much then the 6112 is your best bet. I wouldn't rule bilstein out just bc the ride is poor. They were designed to be better than a spacer lift but still cheap replacement shocks.

What is everyone pairing the 6112's with for the rear? I'm getting ready to purchase my suspension and can't decide if I should go with 5100 or 5160's.

I have the 5100 out back now but I'm gonna get the 5160 sometime soon. They were unavailable when I ordered my fronts though so that's why I went 5100.

My 5100's are definitely not worn out only 12k on them with only modest off-roading that's why I am so disappointed. I really wanted to like then as well. Can I get a full 3in out of the 6112's does anyone know? And still have some down travel?

Well I just took measurements and I'm sitting at (with a slight rearward grade which would favor the front just a little) 38 3/4's Front with Toytec 5100's 3in setup, Icon UCA's and 39 1/4 Rear with Icon 1.5in Leaf-pack, 5100's. So Yeah I need at least 3in of lift in the front so I guess that rules out the 6112.... looks like I need to keep saving up for a Ex-Travel coil over.

Howdy all. Wanted to get in on this thread as I'm entertaining the idea of 6112 in the front to help with the added weight of an ARB. I'm leaning towards 5160's in the rear and Toytec standard 2" add-a-leaf to keep the ass end at least level, with hopefully some good rake. (I've got a Leer back there)

Off the topic but I'm also looking into eventually installing Ride Rites at some point as well due to a lot of towing and firewood hauling.

Aside from hardware for the add a leaf what have I missed here / what would you recommend?

Longer u bolts and brake lines for the rear. I would get a leaf pack of you have a leer instead of a aal
