    After hours of scouring the forums and googling I've decided to go ahead and just post a new thread.

    1996 4x4 extra cab

    What and how much fluid do I need to do a drain and fill on all of these?

    I've read a couple different things, gl5 is bad, gl5 is ok if only used in differentials, redline is the best, brand doesn't matter etc etc.

    Is this just an opinion thing or is there actually a reason to use one or the other?

    I've searched to death but have found no definite info.

    Also I don't have an owners manual for the truck.

    None of those actually answered the questions I asked in the thread so I'll assume you don't know if gl5 is ok to be used in gen 1 tacomas and instead went with the clichéd "Google is your friend" response.

    I actually did follow the links and was in the middle of writing up a post to make things easier for anyone else who is having the same issue instead of having to read through a million links.

    If I can make it easier on someone else why wouldn't I?

    I'll show you what I mean in about 10 minutes when I'm done writing it. Thanks for the link though pal.

    Ok so what I've found is that gl4 is need for the manual tranny but gl5 can be put in the diffs and transfer case.

    So...
    Transmission needs 2.35 qts of gl4(mt90)
    Transfer case needs 1.1 qt of
    $30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75W-90
    Rear diff needs just under 3 qts 80w-90
    Front diff needs 1.5 qts 75w-90

    Also FYI all plugs will use a 24 mm socket/wrench whatever EXCEPT for the front diff which is 10mm fill and 12mm drain

    Well that got aggressive quick...

    I've done my fluids a couple times now and I believe that I used MT90 in the transmission and rear dif. Mobil1 for the others. I noticed that the capacities of my truck (2001/5VZ/rear locker/manual) were actually slightly lower than what my Haynes manual called for. Prepare for the capacities you listed but don't worry if the fill plug overflows before you reach the full listed capacity.
