I'm not ripping on the new engine just disappointed in Toyota and I don't think I'm jumping the gun..... It will likely be a small gain in overall power and a big gain in MPG and I was hoping for both.... I have called it a "car engine" because it is. It will have less torque then hp and be more revy and that's great for a car... A trucks need torque to work we don't even need 270 hp but 300 torque would be great but we're not getting it... maybe we will have 250 which is less than we have now.... and thanks to CAFE Toyota is caving on the Tacoma and just trowing in the "car engine"..... with the direct injection it will pull good and the engine will run much better, it just won't be a big upgrade in power.... If you have the 3.0 or 3.4 it will be great.... If Toyota uses 3.73 or 4.11 gears it will even be better than the 4.0 stock... But if they would have put the same tech on the 4.0 we all know it would make more over all power and get close to the same MPG.... Just because some guy in gov thinks a 3.5 is the magic size I don't agree..

Maybe I'm just mad because now I don't have enough of a reason to upgrade........ Dang you Toyota...........

So it looks like Toyota is lowering the gearing to compensate for less torque.... SO I will eat some crow,,, good job Toyota........
3.91 and 4.3 gears with a 6 speed now that is an upgrade...... more gearing in 1st and less in 6th means you win on both ends, I didn't expect this I thought they would just throw in the towel.... if you can get the 4.3 with the 3.5 now you're talking, add some 32s or 33s and you're set......

That engine is brand new for 2016, and exclusive to this truck in the American market. No other Toyota or Lexus model offers it. It's being built for us at our engine plant in Alabama. And then we have our new six-speed manual transmission as well as a new six-speed automatic, which will both help improve fuel economy. So the gearing is now 28 percent lower on the front end and 22 percent higher on the rear end of the power band. So getting off the line, we've got a little lower gear now in the manual.

We changed the ratios in our rear differential as well. We're now offering a 3.9:1 and a 4.3:1. Previously we offered five different ratios for the rear end, but realized for the usage our customers have, we just didn't need that many in this truck, so we're just going with the two for 2016.

There's a shop in Vegas that mods brand new mustangs and they've got just over 1000HP. You could frankenstein it so you have a bed in the back for tools and such? Or you could buy a semi so you have a shit ton of torque for towing and then lift it with bigger tires for off road? Or maybe a dump truck?? Vroom vroom.

For me I don't see anything wrong with 270HP. Would it have been nice if it were closer to 305 (GM twins) from a bragging and marketing perspective? Sure, but people who know trucks know that HP comes second to torque. What worries me is during all the auto shows and press releases Toyota PR people talk about an increase in HP (not to hard to do, 236 is a pretty low bar), but they never mention torque. I'm worried the torque number will fall in the 250 to 260 range at a much higher rpm than the current 4.0.

The taller gearing in 6th for the new 6 speed manual sounds great! I never understood why 6th gear (with the Gen 2) was only a fraction higher/taller than 5th.

Wake me up when Toyota releases the torque and MPG figures. Also crossing my fingers for a good 2023 refresh! Still can't get over that Ziggy front end and Mitsubishi Raider tail lights.

Since gearing was brought up, it's an important point. If the engine is going to rev a bit higher to make it's power and/or torque, if you do shorter gearing, you can more than make up for it. So what you'd really want to do is look at the torque at the wheels in each gear and/or at a specific wheel speed between the complete older drivetrain (engine, trans, differential) and the complete new drivetrain and see what it's actually putting to the ground.

Sure revving it higher to make the power and then using gearing to give you the torque at the wheels is going to cost you a bit on engine wear, but I don't think it's going to be overly significant as far as the engine wearing out that much earlier, etc.

The new Tacoma won't have a car engine folks, it will have a Honda Pilot engine. lol. Specs will probably be similar to the base 3.5 liter (non-Ecoboost) motor offered in the new F-150. ~250 torqzzzz

Also, is there even such a thing as a V6 as small as 3.5 liters that is "torquey", not in a car and that is in production?

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Lol, if you want crazy power and torque, buy a Tundra. The Tacoma isn't marketed as a working truck. It's more of a recreational vehicle aimed towards outdoor enthusiasts who want a reliable 4x4 to get them back into the woods, to their favorite fishing/camping spot and for daily driving and ease of parking in tight areas. That's exactly what mine is used for anyway. I have a full size diesel for the real jobs, it builds more torque than the horsepower and torque numbers combined in my Taco.

Besides all that, the 4.0 is very old hat and it wont meet the EPA requirements and CAFE mpg standards in the next few years. This isn't just something Toyota is doing, all trucks are stepping down from bigger liters, adding turbo chargers and superchargers to maximize fuel economy but keep truck-like towing and working abilities. The Ford ecoboost is a prime example of a truck manufacturer that is figuring it out. Dodge is headed in the right direction too with the half ton diesel. Toyota will really need to do something different with the Tundra. I think right now it probably gets the worst mpg of any of the full size trucks at the moment which isn't going to fly for long.
