I just want to be able to haul my 3500 lb camper without the engine breaking a major sweat. A mid-size truck should be able to pull 3500 easily.

Reading this thread it seems some believe Toyota is going to purposely going to take a good selling product and trash it.
Why would they make a Tacoma that no one would want to buy? Bet the engine will meet the average users needs.

My 4.0 L had no issues towing 3500 lbs. 5000 lbs was just too much for long distance trips. The S/C made hills more enjoyable but the truck was still to light to give me that cruising feeling I get when I tow that weight with our F150. I expect the same results from the new Tacoma, and the Colorado in either fuel, for that matter.

90% of Tacoma buyers want a commuter truck. This new Tacoma has mpg and curb appeal in spades. Toyota isn't stupid.

They also kept the offroad model with it's perks so they are still catering to the offroad crew. Some people want the Hilux like numbers and a Diesel, which Toyota is not bringing to the market for reasons that have been stated a few million times on here.

    IMHO
Maybe They started working on truck couple years ago, and with failing Tundra sales they did not want to keep 4.0 line going. 4runners come from Japan so they can get those engine from other factory.
So going to 3.5 made sense for bean counters (save on bunch of people salaries)
Plus years back MPG was the biggest thing on the market. Their Highlander hybrid was selling at 50 000 units, now its down to couple thousands.
Bad timing, bad decision it will cost them just sit and watch.

Good grief Charlie Brown. I say wait until you can actually drive one before kicking it to the curb. I doubt they would purposely put a dog of a V-6 in the new trucks. The 3.4 has been proven to be a solid motor over the years. The trend for a lot of car makers has been getting more horsepower out of smaller engines.

So you are saying no one cares about mpg anymore because of temporarily low gas prices...

Yet you fail to mention CAFE again...

So if they reused the same engine you would of been happy with the new truck you would of been happy...

No, you wanted a V8 Tacoma, which isn't happening for a ton of reasons. Mostly due to the past failures of V8 midsized trucks and CAFE requirements. Toyota isn't here to build the best BlueT truck they can. That would put them broke overnight.

MPG better beat the Colorado with the Atkinson's cycle, smaller (barely) displacement, and weaker HP output.

Don't worry it will be able to pull your 3500 trailer no problem. Never mind what some people on this forum might say otherwise.

    No brah, you're wrong brah.

Don't you know you need at least 400 HP and 2000 lbs of payload to tow 3500 lbs of trailer?

Not to mention Dezul. You need to burn oil if you want to tow anything.

Oh, and BARE MINIMUM you need the 10 year old engine in the 4Runner. Anything else with less displacement is just the freaking Highlander engine for christ sakes.

Technology is just another word for vagina. Progress is for idiots and who gives a damn about guvarnate raguletions.

You guys don't get it. In order to move weight you need a Tacoma that's fitted out like a Dodge 2500, Cummins and all. I don't give two shits what it would cost, it would sell all day long. 50,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 units per hour to all the real men out there!

    Edit:

Oh and I almost freaking forgot. You better box up that frame. Better yet the frame should weigh at least 500 lbs heavier or be built out of Titanium. Haven't you seen all of those 15 ton trucks with C-frames folded up like tinker toys, not to mention the Tacoma's dying left and right due to twisted frames from the C-channel design. If Toyota doesn't box the frame I wouldn't even load myself into it, it would just fold up the moment I get in it.

    :D:D

    Excellent post.
Don't forget about idiots who tell people they need full size to tow 5000lb or 6000lb which is below Tacoma tow rating :p:thumbsup:

You may want to look up the difference between need and want in your grade 6 language arts text book.

I've towed 5000 lbs behind my Tacoma for a full summer. I'm done with that plan. My wifes full sized truck just does so much better with that weight, both in mpg and ease of use.

BTW weren't you the guy who said you'd tow 8000 lbs around all day with the Tacoma because it was safe for that :D

Not surprising. Unless it's got Americuh stamped all over it or whatever you are talking about has to do with oil the USA never cares.

I don't think the Colorado will win on torque.

Our geriatric 4.0 makes 20 more ft-lbs to the wheels across the entire rev range than the new Colorado. AND although gas mileage is quoted as better on the Colorado most long term tests look to be exactly the same as I see on my Tacoma.

Well I am certainly hoping Toyota is tuning the 3.5 liter to have more torque. Given it will be rated to tow 200 lbs less than the Colorado my hopes seem diminished however.

This chaps peoples arse on 355nation. When I/we were looking at the Colorado I would lurk on there a bit and guys were definitely not happy with the sticker vs reality fuel economy. Hopefully their Diesel does what some optimists are hoping for mileage and isn't a bust on IRL performance like the EcoDiesel.
