Wow, looked at all the photos/posts about caning and I am impressed!!! That looks difficult!! Looks like it would require a seriously steady hand, stellar hand/eye coord, and a ridiculous amount of patience. Meaning I will likely never cane. However, I am seriously impressed at how cool it is that you can!! What fab way to put together a little pocket change for vacations!!

Eric & I are thinking about doing something like that, to earn a little extra. It's such a great way to spend some free time if you are a couple that enjoys working on stuff together, why not make some $ while doing something you love??!!?! He built a really nice looking dog bed frame for Dolly yesterday. We might try to see if we can turn making/selling those into some cash, since it's a ton of fun to work on together, and the materials costs are not bad at all. We have all the wood working tools we need already. He just used some super cheap 2 x 4's and 2 x 3's and plywood. But we could offer to build them out of basically any wood someone wanted then just price accordingly.

I can do all the sewing to make little doggie mattresses that would be encased in removable, washable covers, and also I'm experimenting with engraving personalized details on the bed frames. Yesterday I engraved Dolly's name on a small separate piece of wood that we'll attach to the front of the bed frame. But we need to buy the proper Dremel attachment for engraving - using the wrong attachment makes the engraving look a little tarded  Or maybe it's the technique of the engraver ;) I tried engraving a paw print on a little piece of wood, didn't look so perfect :D Maybe I'll share a pic

I would totally draw the line at needle point buddy, don't worry, your loyal trusty OP wouldn't allow it.

Caning, on the other hand, actually looks like a cool way to crank out some good looking furniture! :)

I always thought it would look cool to see a weave like that done with some heavy nylon twine instead of slats, im sure it wouldn't last long but I think it would be very comfortable and cool looking

    You insecure bastards!

I do the highlights in wife's hair. I'd rather do it than pay the $60 for some random hair dresser...plus I get to control how blonde I can make her hair. He, he.

One time to save $ I asked Eric to trim my hair for me. He was so nervous he'd mess up that he sliced his hand open.

Several hundred dollars later at urgent care, we realized the "potential" savings likely wasn't worth it anymore  The docs and staff at the urgent care clinic got a good chuckle out of the story :D

I promise, it's still high on the priority list.

My little feud with my neighbor on Friday over them letting their dog roam the streets when they aren't even home and the associated risk of the dog being run over caused me to avoid projects involving my front yard/driveway the past couple days :D We holed up in the shed/back yard and built dog beds all weekend - since the last time I was out there I yelled FUCK YOU, YOU ARE NEGLECTING YOUR DOG at the guy across the street :D Figured letting some tensions dissipate for a couple days could be a good thing :D

Correct. We've been neighbors with these people for 10 years, and we like them and like their dog. And that's the problem - we like them & the dog (well, other than the way they handle the dog, we like them), so I would hate to see anything bad happen to the little dude, for his sake and for theirs. But they refuse to put up a fence, and apparently they still are not convinced that they need to use a leash, despite different people in the neighborhood returning the dog to them on more than one occasion because he was wandering around in traffic, as well as someone calling animal control on them once a couple years ago. Most everyone in our neighborhood has been frustrated by this problem at one time or another, whether because they had to go out of their way to return the dog, they almost had a car accident trying to avoid hitting the dog (has happened to me), they were pissed that the dog's turds were all over their lawn, they were trying to walk their own dog (on leash) and this dog ran up to them and instigated a fight........on and on and on........and more than one person has hinted, sometimes in a pretty direct/pissed off manner even, that they are sick of it. Yet these people still seem to believe that leash laws and turd laws just simply do not apply to them. I guess they think they own the neighborhood? Not sure. But I've had my fill and finally said something in a very rude/direct manner on Friday, after years and years of dropping friendly hints (offering to help build a fence, offering to give them this really nice doggie cable tie out/runner thingy I have, trying to gently point out the dangers of letting him run loose like that constantly), but otherwise keeping my mouth shut. I am just sick of worrying that the dog is going to be run over, and I would be so mad at myself if he did get hit by a car and I hadn't tried my very best to convince them to build a fence or use a freaking leash, just for the sake of trying to keep the peace with them. Fuck that. If it takes them hating me to get them to think twice about letting him run around, so be it. Worth it to me. Might save the little dude's life.

Also the dude handles the dog way too rough when he's mad at him. Not outright abuse, but bordering on it IMO. If the dog doesn't listen right away, he'll grab him by his scruff and pick him up (he's a little thing) and basically drag him by his neck like that to wherever he's heading with him. And if he sees the dog shitting in someone else's yard, he'll start screaming at the dog while the poor little guy is still mid dump, then go over and do that same angry handling thing like I described above, yanking on the poor little guy. That poor dog is gonna develop problems pooping if he's screamed at/roughly handled like that every time he takes a dump!! He doesn't understand the reason he's being yelled at is that he's going in the wrong place by his owner's definition of where to go. I'd bet my life on it the dog simply thinks he's in trouble for pooping. That's fucked up. Hey, here's a thought - if they had a fence, or used a leash, they could control where the dog shits, then they could stop listening to a bunch of pissed off neighbors bitch about his turds in their yard, AND they could stop abusing their dog every time he takes a shit. There's a crazy idea! Nah, that makes far too much sense........let's keep screaming at him when he poops and also keep fighting with each other. That's way more fun than clipping a leash on.

I just feel bad for the dog - these people have no business owning one. They don't even love that thing. If they did, they wouldn't be able to drive away to work, knowing he's running around the freaking streets loose. It ain't like we live in the country. This is a residential neighbor with plenty of moderately paced traffic surrounding us in every direction. It's not right.

    Sorry guys, end rant.

you could always call animal control "anonymously" and have them pick the dog up and fine the owners for lease law violation, often money is the only thing that convinces people to do the right thing and it gets results a lot faster then talking.

On Friday, I told the guy (among other things) to his face that if I saw the dog running around loose again like that, I would call. I didn't want to do the old "pretend like it wasn't me" because I felt like they'd know anyway, and it would drive me nuts trying to hide it. Plus, I really don't WANT to call - I just want them to stop putting the dog in danger. So I guess I hoped the threat of me calling would make them think twice.

So far, we've seen the dog running around in the street more than once. Looks like I was successful.

But seriously, even if they would just be more freaking careful about leaving for work when they know the dog is running the streets loose, I would be happier. Still not a great overall situation for the dog, but that would be a big improvement. That part is just totally ridiculous IMO. And I'm hoping that my little rant may have at least made them more cautious to avoid that mistake again.

I was thinking about that. We got so many different opinions on the wheel bearing topic that I honestly don't know if we need to be planning for that anytime soon or not!! I should chat with Eric about that and see what he thinks. And the shocks were on our list, but he looked at them and realized they are fine, so we just need to spend the dough on nicer ones if we want any improvement there, and we are not spending on them anytime soon. We also thought we might need to do rack & pinion a while back, but noahpete thought it looked fine, so we are going with that good news!! :)

It's down to finishing topper and doing some more little cosmetic/paint things to it. I will definitely post pics of where I roller painted the top rails surrounding the truck bed with the Rustoleum. I didn't sand, or prep at all other than washing first. And it looks great IMO, for being so incredibly simple and cheap!! Certainly not perfect at all, but so much better than it was!! Damn, I don't think I got any "before" pics of that. Crap. Maybe I've got other shots that show how bad they looked before........
