Just a quick question for those tuning. I am going to be doing the install of the TRD blower on my truck this coming weekend, and I have a preliminary question mark on the fuel pressure regulator mod.

Is the reason for performing the FPR mod to compensate for lack of the stock fuel pump's inability to keep up? Or is it a mod that is applicable regardless of the fuel pump you currently have in tank?

I currently am running the AEM E85 capable 320lph pump so flow will be no problem, however, I am planning on swapping out the pulley to a 2.8 stealth series URD pulley (for California reasons). Therefore the need for this preliminary question before the install. Thanks in advance!

I have heard the tunes are pig rich before, but the flipside to the coin is that I have heard that since you are developing the extra boost with the smaller pulley, you'll need the fuel to be able to keep up with the new demand of extra air being induced.

THIS. I have the 2.8 and still run pretty rich at 11.2 WOT. If I went down to the 2.7 pulley I would do the FPR mod. All it does is maintain fuel pressure better. You might run even a little richer with it.

Are you saying some of these people run this mod that way they DON'T have to get a tune?

Thi is my first blower so I'm kind of on my way to crash coursing in boost and learning about it fairly quickly. I'm familiar with FI, but not to a very large degree.

Ok so consensus is route lines without FPR mod, run the 2.8 and that should actually get me fairly close to stoich by getting the boost correct to compensate for the ridiculous amount of fuel being dumped in via TRD tune.

Interesting. Maybe I should route the lines FPR mod until I am able to take it to the dealer to get it tuned for boost then that way I don't have to deal with the worry about it building boost on the street or the highway prior to.

Is there a way you could route the lines in order to apply the vaccuum to the bypass valve in a manner where you are not disturbing anything else and all ports are still properly capped off?

Noted. Its probably best to just get it tuned and be done with it then. The dealer is about 10-15 miles away from myself as well. I do have one big hill on the freeway so I'll put it along like a grandpa on the slow lane. Thanks for tips Rock.

Thanks man. Agreed. It was just a preliminary question I had. Going to the dealer is kind of a pain, but making sure the running condition of it is correct before hand is much more important. blower install is on this coming Sunday. I just want to make sure I have all of my bases covered. :)

Someone else nust asked the same question to me. I started this "mod" because of a necessity since there was a lack of tuning options available for the '09+'s. It is not however my mod as it is just adapted technology from other vehicles. As Rock Lobster already stated.

First thing is first. You must have an upgraded fuel pump that is rated for High pressures. You specifically do.

Then you need an AFR gauge.

Next, you need to be at a point where you are making just enough boost to kind of need a tuning device, since the "proper method" would be to have larger injectors( based off of fuel consumption formula for brake specific horse power) tuned by an aftermarket ECU. Except that no aftermarket ECU is available or you don't have the funds.

So you are at a point to where the increased boost is near maxing out the flow of the injectors at a static 43.5 psi, so you need more fuel.

To get more fuel you increase the fuel pressure. Taxes the output of the pump, which is why you need a larger pump as well as an H.P. pump, and increases the flow out of the injectors.

The TRD injectors still have a limit of how much they can flow and atomized properly before they still need to be upgraded. Around 9 psi on the TRD reflash and TRD injectors is where the FPR mod is necessary.

DO NOT USE ON A STOCK FUEL PUMP, ESPECIALLY IF ADDITIONAL POWER MODS AND SMALLER PULLEYS ARE USED!!!

Thanks for the chime in Mark! Since I will be running the canned TRD tune, based on the conversation I had with Rock it sounds as if this mod is unnecessary?

Pretty much, until you are boosting ~9psi and have intake, headers, and exhaust components. You'd be around the ~350+ whp level at that point.

Awesome man! What does the blower boost at pre URD 2.8 pulley if you don't mind me asking?

Awesome, so either way I will be under 9 PSI regardless even if you factor altitude or not. I just ordered the pulley, the blower and fit kit are on their way. I'll be updating my build soon. Thanks for all your help guys! :) I'm looking forward to being boosted! :D

My truck was able to touch 8 lbs on the 2.8 at near sea level. I peak at 7 lbs at 1300 feet here.

Eh... theoretically the lesser the backpressure the lesser number shown on the boost gauge so it should be the opposite. That being said when I cut out my rear cats I did find pieces of front cat in them so you certainly could. You're on the stock pulley right? That is a pretty high number.
