Gents, to throw a bit of practicality into the engine spec... IF, IFFFF the 3.5 is slated to be 270 hp, as many of others have said is not as important as Torque... and if you look at the history of Toyota Trucks, Torque has typically been more than a tad, higher than the HP number. I do expect this to be a 290-300 FTLB engine. This added with the weight reduction (which the 2nd gen was already lighter than the new GM twins) will make this truck feel QUICK compared to the existing Tacoma and the GM twins. They have already stated QRD, MPG were their two major concerns for this 3rd gen but they also know, you can't get the balls off in the process. All the speculation but Yota isn't foolish enough to take their truck DNA of it feeling like a truck away i.e. HP<TQ just to compete more on MPG.... my .02

I agree 100%. The 2nd Gen Tacoma is already a solid truck; I'm looking for the 3rd Gen to continue to solidify the Tacoma formula (better power to weight ratio and MPG).

Who ever buys the 2016, make sure you buy a matte screen protector for the media display screen, finger prints galore:

I don't think the screen is big enough. I would like to to see it extend beyond the dash height.

I hope you are right, the point of this thread is my concern for the loss of torque not HP, I expect max torque to be around the 250 range based on current 3.5s...... If it is 270 or higher with better gearing and direct injection, this truck will rock.... 290-300 would get me picking out colors....

    While I want
I 100% agree with this logic except for one thing. Prior to this point, the Tacoma 4.0L in the 2nd Gen has been a stroked version of the 3.5L anyway. They stroked the engine to 4.0L to get the torque number higher which resulted in the HP figure being lower (due to lower redline). The 3.5L that's coming will be a a V6 with bore and stroke more closely resembling the rest of the Toyota line up. I'd REALLY like to see a torque figure close to 300 but I think they'll have a hard time doing it. Especially way way down low in the RPM band.
That being said, I don't think it will be a bad engine by any means. I think it will be way better than what we have now.

What would be REALLY cool is if some company offered an aftermarket stroker kit for this engine with all forged internals. Then you could have the lower end monster torque and STILL rev higher to make huge power up top. :D

Even if this new 3.5L only made 260 peak torque, it could have a more robust low end torque curve. The old Tacoma 1GR never made over 250 lb-ft below 3500RPM. It appears to be between 220 and 240 up until 3000 RPM.

Direct injection is great about flattening the curve. I expect we will see a curve that very closely matches the 1GR on the low end (maybe even a little more robust thanks to D4-S) with a little more top end much like the 1GR update basically kept the low end the same and added to the top end.

Like I keep saying, we'll have to wait and see. Considering that this engine has the same D4-S tech and same displacement as the 2GR-FSE, the 270 peak HP rather than 306hp tells me that it was tuned for truck power delivery rather than peak power.

I still say, based on the estimated redline, the MINIMUM amount of torque this engine will have is 260 ft lbs. Which leads me to believe we will see something in the 280-290 range for torque. If they hit 300 ft lbs will BlueT eat a sock?

I think if the toruqe #'s surpass the current 4.0l, BlueT should eat sock.
